Tuinking that the cries were made by some persons who had broken") through the ice, several men turned ont with lanterns and ropes; but after making diligent s arch they failed to tind anyone on or about the ice. On the following morning it was liscovered that thenoise which sv alarmed the neighborhood was made by the village ped- agogue and a companion named Vissey, who were out on a lark—and in this way tried to have some fun with their neighbors They have probably learned, ere this, that there was not half so much fun in their little joke as they thought there would be, and it will likely be some time before it will be repeated. -

Srapsinc Arrray.—A_ recent letter from St. Peter’s Bay gives some particulars of a stabbing affray which occurred at that place on the 25th ult., but which for some reason or another has not yet been brought before the courts. It appears that on that day two resi- dents of the place were going along the road on their way to prayer meeting, when some boys began snow-balling them. A snowball struck one of these persons in the eye and he reaafter the boy wao threw it, and upon catehing him hit him with his hand. After being hit the lad drew a knife and stabhed his assailant in the breast through two coats and two plysof his handkerchief, and in two places on the arm, cutting him severely on the muscles through two heavy coat sleeves and two woolen shirts. The father of the person stabbed, it is stated, went to take the jaw of

the boy, but so far nothing h 1a come O it of the matter The authorities will likely enquire into the facts of the case, and see that

justiceis done all concerned.

THE SLOW POISONING CASE Lizzie Stewart Still Missing. AN ADJOURNMENT GRANTED Until All-Fool’s Day.

It was after eleven o’clock this forenvon when Mrs. Weeks entcred the court room, accoinpanied by her brotlier. She seemed to be in good health and spirits. The at- tendance of spectators was comparatively small.

Attorney-General McLeod intimated to the court that Lizzie Stewart, the missing witness in the case, had not yet been found, Since his return to the province, redoubled efforts had been made to find her, and he had strong hopes of being able to secure her within a week. He, therefore, asked that the case be adjourned for one week

longer. Mr. Peters objected to any further postponement. However, he said the

matter was in the hands of the Magis- trate.

The Magistrate said that as long as there was any reasonable probability of the wit- ness being found and brought here, he saw no objection to a postponement.

Mr. Peters remarked that as the examin- atiou was only a preliminary one, he could not see the necessity for so many postpone- ments,

The Attorney-General again requested @ postponement. He said that if this case terminated now, a new proseci- tion would have to be commenced and the whole case would have to be gone over again. Besides, he said, a witness could not be searched for if a prosecution

were net pending.

The Magistrate said he would grant a postponement until this day week. Bail was then received, the Court was cleared, and another act in the drama was
