A Central City special says the most de- structive flood in the history of the country oceurred on Monday afternoon, by the bursting of a cloud accompanied by thunder and lightning. The citizens were startled by an almost unearthlyzoar to the west, and almost instantly a volume of water five feet deep rushed down Nevada and Eureka streets, carrying away huge stones like feathers. Rocks weighing 500 or 600 pounds were rolled along the streets like pebbles. Animals and everything in the track of the flood were swept away and the streets were gullied to the depth of six feet. Loss $50,000. One man was drowned.

Several houses were destroyed at Idaho Springs.

Several houses in Virginia Canon were carried away anda girl drowned. Nearly all railroad and country bridges between the Forks of Ozart and Idaho were swept away and nearly al! the houses in the busi- ness part of the town were flooded and the streets damaged, which will amount to §20,- 000.

Cinotnnati, O., Aug. 9. A despatch says that 15 ‘‘ regulators ” rode into Grayson, Kentucky, last Satur- day, and attempted to assume control, The marshal raised a posse, killed three regulators and captured four. Sr. Loum, Mo., Aug. 9. The boiler of a steam threshing machine on the farm of Henry Young, near Colum- bia, IL, exploded this morning, killing five persons and seriously injuring five others. Boston, Aug. 9. Judge James D. Colt, of Massachusetts Supreme Court, committed suicide this afternoon by shooting himself through the head. He had long been in bad health,

Australian advices state that Parliament passed a poll tax bill of ten pounds on every Chinaman, aiid vessels are prohibited from bringing more than one Chinaman to each huadred tons. Small pox is prevalent in Sydney.

At the weekly meeting of the Land League to-day subecriptions to the amount of £2,754 were anpeunced, the whole being from America and New Zealand. Dillon was not present. Fr. Cantwell, a Tipperary priest, who presided, said they should be thankful that Dillon wes not killed in prison. The Land Bill, he said, was noth- ing tothem. The League should continue to resist landlordisin.

PHARMACEUTISTS from all parts of the world have been in sessien in London during the past week. The main work of the congress was the compilation of an international pharma- copceia, one which shall contain all the more important drugs reduced as nearly as possible to the same gtrength. A committee of two from each country has beer appointed to carry out this work. The meeting also favored a uniform system of latin nomenclature, for the pharmacopeeia for all countries.

A pARING robbery was committed at a sew- ing machine store on Notre Dame Street, Mon- treal, on ‘Tuesiay last. The proprietor of the store had drawn $5,000 from the bank to pay his empleyeés and had taken it to his store and placed it in his till. A few minutes afterwards two men entered, one of whom pretended to want to buy a sewing machine, He was not able to bargain, however, and they left. A few minutes afterwards the money was missed from the till.

Twe men belonging to the schooner ‘‘Joe Howe,” of Clyde River, left their vessel on Saturday Jast to attend their trawls. The schooner was lying at anchor, and a boy was left in charge soon after the men left their vessel, a dense fog set in, and consequently they were lost. After beingin the fog for twelve heurs, the steamer ‘‘ Edgar Stuart” hove ins‘ght and rescued the men, and the next day safely landed them on their Vessel. — He. Herald.
