It may be truly said that, taken alto— gether,a more successful St. Andrew’s Dinner was never given in Charlottetown. From the first eloquent addreas delivered by Rev. Mr. Fullerton to “Auld Lang Syne” and “God Save the Queen,” at the close, the entertainment was all good—and there was neither wine nor whiskey at the board.

Norhas any magazine ever had a larger number of really distinguish- ed artists engaged upon the illustration of a single number. The reader might be puzzled to know how such a number can be made at the price of ten cents. But the magazine itself affords the solu- tion. (2) He looked backward in his life. He had run the race. He kept the course. Ever since he had been started by God he had kept on racing to the end. Paul lived up to his ideal. Whatie yours? Some have an unworthy ideal, but others to glorify God. Some would rather die than wilfully sin against the God we love.

(3) He looked forward to his death “The time of my setting sail is at hand.” Like a mariner going from continent to con- tinent. What mistakes we makeabout death It is not waving plumes, habiliments of meurning, Open graves and weeping eyes. No, it is setting sail for glory.

(4) A forward view looking upward to his reward. Heaven is as much a reality as Prince Edward Island. We are too etherial, but when God removes some of

our loved ones to heaven then it becomes a reality. (1) What is your view of heaven? (2) What are your desires?

(3) What is your preparation fur heaven ? The meeting for testimony wus very re-

Dr. Crothers, of Haz.ford, who has had long experience in the management of in- stitutions for the inebriete and insane, says that “inebriety is the active cause of from 15 to 50 per cent. of all of insan- ity; from 30 to 80 per cent. of all idiocy; from 60 to 90 per cent of all pauperism, and from 50 to 85 percent. of all crime,” then asks the question, “Who can estim-— ate the relief of the taxpayers by the re- moval of the perils to both property and life from drunkenness ?”

Dr. Day, of Boston, in his late annual

report of the Washington Home for the Treatment of Inebriater, says: “On the individual the effect of vicious alcoholic indulgence is disease of the body. Sooner or later it must succumb. Disease of the mind is not far off. It may be delirium or insanity.”

Dr. Formad found in the dead house autopsies of the Philadelphia Hospital that in 250 chronic alcoholists nearly 90

per cent. had fatty degeneration of the liver, 60 per cent. had congestion or a dropsical state of the brain; the same uumber an inflamed or degenerated stom- ach, while not quite one per cent. had nor- mal! kidneys.
