A Fate She Didn't Escape.

as good English as you do, though he is French by birth. He is coming here to visit at my cordial invitation, and it isthe desire of my heart that you should be mutually pleased. I koow of no young man that [ would so gladly

expect of you as my daughter and the nominal mistress of my house—a court- eous and hospitable reception of our guest.”

Mr. Martyn pocketed Quinten’s letter drew on his over. Oat, took his hat, and kissed his wilful daughter on one cheek, and went away.

He loved her tenderly—this mother- less daughter of his, her wildest pranks had been forgiven or laughed at by him, and since her return from boarding school, a year before, they had been very happy together.

She was just nineteen; a tall, grace- ful, bright-iaced girl, with scornful red lips, and big hazel eyes, a quantity of nut-brown hair which curled in jittle soft ringlets over her forehead.

She was the veriest child in many respects, and after her departure for his office, she pondered desperately over a dozen impracticable plansfor evading “that Frenchman,” as in her mind she termed him; for, with a woman's per- versity, she had at once decided that the stranger would prove most dis— agreeable, and that to stay at heme and entertain him for a month was not to be thought of.

Of asudden, a wild idea flashed through her brain; s9 wild that her eyes dilated, and she caught her breath with a little gasp at the boldness of it. And then 2 miscbevious smile awoke a ravishing dimple in one cheek, as start- ing from her chair, she took a reckless pirouette down the long room, ending

With a Ne. 5 Stove we cooked tor a party of seven, giving them broiled oysters, steak, lamb chops, and baked biscuit, in 45 minutes, at a cost for gas of 4§ cents. On another occasion we gave a dinner in courses of twenty men, the bill of fare as follows: Broiled shad, beet steak, roast quarter of lamb, baked biscuit and coffee; heating the water for washing the dishes tour times, re-setting the table three times.
