:Potato Board Plebiscile

There has been little interest shown in the forthcoming plebiscite on the continuance of the Potato Marketing Board. This is not I desirable attitude regardless of the views one may hold on the limited functions the Board now performs. The Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Mr. tfullen, in a statement'in Satur- day's tiuardian points out that the plebiscite has been called in ac- cordance with the provisions of the Marketing Act and that it has not been specifically-requested by any petson or group of persons. He cites Inc advantages at-curing from the agreed charge freight rate on potato shipments from this Prov- ince to Montreal, and states that the abolition of the Board could well mean the abolition of this ngroomcrit. also that it might not be possible to secure a support price from the Federal Government if we have no Board to administer such a program.

These matters are important, anti should be considered seriously by our farmers. Such organizations as our Federation of Agriculture and Pt'oduce.rs' Association should be in a position to discuss the merits of the issue, and it is to be hoped they will do so before the vote is taken on October 30, We shall not tvrrsunw to loist our own. views upon them, but we think that apathy in a matter of this kind is the poorest policy to pursue. This in a free country. but we do nothing to mppnrt the democratic rights we enjoy by abstaining from exercising its privileges. Plebiscitea are held for the purpose of obtaining public opinion -- in this case the opinion of those chiefly concerned in our potato industry. The pros and cons of the issue should be freely dia- mssed if any worthwhile decision is to be reached.
