REV. MR. GORDON’S ADDRESS.

In movirg the third resolution, Rev. J. A. Gordon confassed to a feeling of pride that this Society, with so comprehensive and God-like a mission, humanly speaking, had its origin in the suggestion of a Bap- tist, Rev. John Hughes, and that the de- nomination he represented aiways had a noble succession of those who consecrated powers and life to make the aims of this Society an accomplished fact in the world. Such names as that of Carey, Judson, Brown, Jones and Jewitt were mentioned. The Word of God is the only rule by which life in all its fullness can be developed and enjoyed. It bears on every page the image and superscription of God. Its wonderful unity rejects any other explanation than God for 1ts existence, containing as it does 66 books writtea by 40 different authors, who hved at different periods of sixteen centuries, and geographically remote one from the other. Notwithstanding all this, these sixty-six books compose one consist- ent, harmonious whole. What we call mysterious and inexplicable, longer time, deeper search and richer experiece make plain.

This Bible was never more sought, ear- nestly vead or diligently studied than it is to-day. Its reformation begins with the heart, and by consequence adjusts human conduct to eternal realities. It is the basis «nd inspiration of the twin forces that work for good in this world, viz., faith and freedom. Freedom divorced from \faith in the past introduced the reign of terror. Unbelief has no brotherly bond, because it severs the fatherly tie. If the Bible and its influence were taken away from our history end experience, with it would go our Christian light, rights and liberty, as well as faith, consolation, com- fort, hope and courage. What is so bene- ficial and precious to us, we ought to send to our less fortunate brothers and sisters throughout the world.
