Mvurper or Mr. BLANDPORD AT Naries.—Mr. Blandford had only been in Naples five days when, on the evening of the 25th | ult., he left his hotel (Les Les Britanniques), at about a) quarter-past eleven o’elock, for a short stroll in the Riviera | di Chiaja. On his arriving just opposite the Church of St. | Giuseppe he was overtaken by aman, who, having passed hin, | knocked off his own cap, asif by some preconcerted signal, and | then eadeavoured to seize him by the throat. Mr. Llandford | instantly drew back, and struck the man severely in the | face with a stick, thus compelling him to retreat, but almost) at the same moment he received a blow on his head from one
of two raffians who were closely following him, which |;
yrostrated him instantly, and it is supposed that they either | jumped upon him, or kicked him, causing severe injuries. As) there Was some slight moonlight, he was able to perceive that, there were three men, and that the one who first attacked Lim was a short man, and wore a jacket anda peaked cap. In! consequence of his cries and struggles the ruflians were too) much alarmed to succeed in their attempt at robbery, beyond his hat and his cane, and effected a precipitate retreat. As soon as he had recovered his consciousness Mr. Blandford reeled across the street and reached some men who were standing at the door of a cafe, not one of whom would come to his assistance. He then man to proceed, with great difficulty, as far as the house of Mrs. Corby, an Englishwoman long resident in Naples, where be was placed in a carriage and conveyed to his hotel. Mr. Roskilly was immediately called in, and he, together with Dr. Bishop, and a Neapolitan surgeon, were in constant attendance, but he died a few days | afterwards. Upwards of forty persons known as capable of | such acts of aggression, have been arrested, and a reward, with | free on, been offered to any accomplice who will| reveal the. name of the man who gave the blow.
Disturpances at Jassy.—Letters from Bucharest state that, although the elubs have been dissolved, the spirit by which those bodies were animated has not been extinguished, and that | the electoral agitation is much more formidable than it was, before. The several commissioners were to continue their re- sidence at Jassy @ fortnight longer, in order that they might see with their own eyes the progress, and the issue of the affair. There will be a strict investigation into the justice of the complaints that have been made. A demonstration took place at Jassy on the 26th of April, which induced the Cai-| macan to forbid the repetition of such scenes. A crowd of! men had assembled, who paraded the streets with the flags} and banners of different countries, but there were other flags | on which were emblazoned *‘The Union,*’** A Foreigh Prince,’ | «4 Constitutional Government,’ and *‘ Security for Self- | Government,’’ and they made the passengers greet these em- blems with cheers and hurrahs. Hundreds of the agents of Austria are whetting the rage of the peasantry, and others in| Wallachia and Moldavia against the Boyards, and the reason | ef all this onderhand work is because she finds the nobles are | not to be gained over to her interests.

Present rrow THe Kine or PortvGat To THE QUEEN oF FEvotanp.—The King of Portugal has just sent over to this. country a present of cattle of a very peceet breed to Her | Majesty Queen Victoria, consisting of a bull, two heifers and | @ ball calf. The animals, which are of the most perfect’! symmetry, and very diminutive, standing scarcely 40 inches high, are of a dun colour and in fine condition. The cows are very doeile, but the bull, on being driven from the station to Prince Albert's Model Farm, Frogmore, where they are now installed, exhibited a disposition rather the reverse of that of his companions, by tossing an unfortunate donkey, about his own size, which happened to come in his way. These Lilliputian animais very much resemble the Alderney or Jersey breed, but appear to be scarcely more than half the | size.
Iatsm Ewteration.—One of the Kerry papers has the following statement respecting the progress of the population drain in that quarter :—** We learn from many quarters of tlie kingdom that, notwithstanding the present prosperous state of Ireland, emigration on an extensive scale is going on—an emigration that embraces some of the very best of the working classes, particularly in the rural districts. Already have four large vessels sailed from Tralee for Transatlantic ports, with emi- | grants, chiefly young farm servants of both sexes; and two others are announced to leave before the close of the current month. Besides this emigration direct from the county town, people are every week leaving different parts of Kerry for America via Liverpool. Nor must we omit to notice in connexion with this subject that a different class of emigrants are leaving our county for Australia in no small numbers— we refer now to the younger sons of thé more comfortable | farmers, healthy young fellows who prefer to try their luck at |

The Zulu massacre beyond the Tugela, at Natal, has not been followed up by further violence ; and the anticipated danger of an irrupion appears to be gradually subsiding. The elections for the new Legislative Council there have not yet terminated. Within the colony trade is fast increasing. The exports for 1856 exceeded those of last year by £269,786; and the imports also show an increase of £412,- 004, yielding an addition to the Customs revenue of £42,- 277. The prices of most articles of agricultural produce are just pow unusually high in the Cape Town Market, wheat fetching from 8Us to 36s per muid (about 3 }ushels), and other grain in proportion; wine £7 10s to £8 per leaguer ; aud wool from Is to 1s 6d and 2son the spot. Of this latter product there was exported last year to the value of £831,142, being £197,012 more than in 1855, The Angora goats imported from Persia by Messrs. LOCAL NEWS.
Fire in tae Woops.—Much loss of property has been occa- sioned about Mill River and vicinity by fires which broke out on Monday, 25th May. The fire seems to have originated about Haslam’s, on the Malpeque road, and run in an easterly direction, carrying away whateverstood in its way. The scene is deseribed as terrific in the extreme—nothing scarcely could be seen for a distance of three miles but one sheet of fire, which, blown by a strong westerly wind, seemed to menace total de- struction. Fortunately, no sives were lost; several buildings were lost, among which was the Wesleyan meeting-house ‘at Millvale—a handsome new building, all efforts to save it being fruitless, and the Mill River sehool-hbouse burnt to ashes, bouks saved. ‘The heaviest loser in this vicinity is Mr. Wm. Hacker, of Trout River, who lost his dwelling-house, two large barns, threshing machine, sleighe, carriages, all sorts of farming utensils and mostly all his fencing. His loss is estimated at £700. Mr. Hacker was a wealthy and respectable farmer, well known and esteemed by ali the community. Also, Mr. Wm. Pickering, of Hope River, lost a large barn (about 60 feet in length); threshing machine, sleighs and seyeral other articles; his loss is not less than £100. There are altogether nine buildings burnt about this vicinity itself. It is to be feared that there has been much more throughout the Island, as the air was darkened with smoke, and the fire seemed to range in al] directions.—Pro.

Tue Frres.—On Monday, the 25th ult., fire spread through some parts of the country, before a strong and warm S. W. wind, with a velocity aaa damage hardly paralleled in the memory of the ** oldestinhabitant.’ In our section of Queen’s County, though tolerably well cleared and settled, we have heard of several dwelling-houses, barns and bridges, a school- house and Methodist chapel totally destroyed. Mr. Hacker, of Mill River, seems to be the greatest sufferer. We have heard his loss estimated at £700. His dwelling-house and barn, we are told, stood at a considerable distance from the forest, but the fiery tempest was carried so speedily along the

On Tuesday last, suddenly, of an affection of the heart, Mr. Wm. Smail, Prince-street, aged 43 years. Mr. Smail had been working at | his employment all day, in his usual bealth, when, shortly after entering | the room where his family were, be fell down and instantly expired. The deceased was-a native of Devonshire, and emigrated here in 1841. | He has left a wife and six children to deplore their loss.
