Farmers Gorna West.— The Canadian Pacfic express last night took away a number of farmers Belonging to Nova Scotia and P. E. Island, bound for British Columbia and ‘the Northwest. The party including women and children, numbered fifty-four, and comfortably - filled a colonist car.—Lz.

Oxnarcep Wir Murper.—The inquest on the body of the two little McGonigle girls, the particulars of whose recent brutal murder at Cumberland, Ont.. have already appeared in Tue Examrnzn, has been con- cluded. The jury returned a verdict that the girls met their death by strangulation, and from evidence strongly suspect Narcissa Larocque of being the guilty party. They ordered his arrest, and he was committed to the next assizes.

—The Summerside Journal asks that the Stanley be placed upon the Point-du-Chene Summerside route as soon as the St. Law- rence is compelled to retire. The request is worthy <f consideration. We cannot afford, this year, to do withoutany means of transport that can be put upon the straits when the ice is forming.

A meeting was held this evening to form a Maritime Province Football Uniou. Re- presentatives were present from D -thousie, Kings and Acadia, the Wanderers, New Glasgow and West Riding football teams. It was decided to form such a union. Capt, Wood, of the West Riding, was elected President, Prof. C. G. Roberts, of King’s, Vice-President, andJ. N. Duffus Secretary- Treasurer. The constitution of the Scot- tish Rugby Union was adopted essentially as the constitution of the new union. The playing rules of the same union were also adopted. All Clubs in the Maritime Pro- vinces will be members of the union on paying the fee of $2. A great improvement will be made in the system of scoring by points,

Halifax News.

The West Riding Regiment, it is said, is to leave this station in March next for Shorncliffe, England. The Grenadier Guards and the 17th Regiment, now at Ber- muda, are expected to relieve the West Riding.

St. Matthew's Presbyterian Church of this city has deen vacant since the appoint- ment of Rey. R. Laing to the secretaryship of the Ladies College.

At a Congregationalist meeting to-night it was agreed to call Rev. A. J. Mowet, of Fredericton. The salary is $4,550 with a manse.

Notwithstanding the increased tariff on potatoes, American buyers are now pur- chasing in this district and paying an ad- vance of five cents a bushel on the old pric.

Ottawa News. Orrawa, Oct. 22.

The Minister of Marine and Fisheries has been notified by parties in Nova Scotia that it is their intention to ship live lubsters te the English market, and arrangements are now being made with the steamship com- panies with that object in view.

The Minister of Marine states that the Government have received no intimation from the Newfoundland Government of their intention to open the negotiations with the States regarding the fishery ques- tion.

Louis Terreault, aged 19, got up ona circular saw table at Ross Estate Mills this morning and fell across the saws, one of which cut off his two feet, the other sever- ing the body in two diagonally. “He died an hour after the accident.

Prospective Markets for Canada.

The Department of Agriculture at Ottawa has issued a commercial pamphlet dealing with the trade done on this continent, which contains besides the detailed statistics of trade between the United States and Central and South America, the tariffs of the Argentine Republic, Boliva, Brazil, Chili, Colombia, Escuador, Peru, Uruguay, as well as the new United States tariff including the free list. In a brief introduction, Mr. George Johnson, Government statistician, says: “The tables show what trade with the continent has been done by the United States. As Canada has much the same classes of articles to. export as the United States; these tables will serve as a ' guide to our exporters. Attention is specially | directed to the table showing the market ‘there is for flour.. The several countries in | South and Central America and.the West | Indian Islands import over $12,000,000 worth ‘of flour. It is believed that with our superior | wheat much of this trade could be done by Canada, which is compelled by the increased tariff against her products entering the United States market to seek new outlets for her products, and thus make up for pos-

sible loss.”
