Butter—An Important Discovery.

upon a discevery which, applicable to the preservation of fresh butter, with only suf- ficient salt in it to flavor it, is so simple and inexpensive as to be within the reach of all. Although the process has not been fully descri)ed, there can be no doubt but that the substance used is salicylic acid, either in the form of a very dilute aqueous solu- tion or a preparation of the crystals. This substace, wnich is one of the numerous products of coal tar, a result of modern in- vestigations into organic substances, has for some time been well kuown in the arts and in medicine as a powerful antiseptic. It has the property in a marked degree of pre- venting or arresting putrefaction, and hence the uses to which it may be applied are various. - And, according to the medi- cal journals, it has very good properties as an antiseptic in eruptive diseases, in dip- theria and other human disorders ; and as it destroys the unpleasant odor of wounds, it has been welcomed as a valuable sanitary agent in the wards of the hospitals. 1t was long azo known that it had the power of destroying bactenia, animalenles and other forms of organism in water, and a series of experiments lately, on an extensive scale, have proved that it has the power of keep- ing Water sweet on board vessels at sca dur- ing very long voyages. Other experiments have also shown that it has the power of keeping milk, eggs and meat in a condition of freshness for a considerable period of time. There are, of course, other antisep- tics whicu will do all that is claimed for salicylic acid—such as carbolic acid—but the great advantage in favor of the new agent is that it is almost tasteless and odor- less, and its good effects are realized by the use of very small quantities. At all events the experiments which have so far been made with tho substance on water, egys, milk and meat, have satisfied those who have been investigating the matters that it is the best agent for the preservation of organic substances as yet known.

Tur Chinese in California have begun to go, The steamer that sailed from San Francisco for Hong Kong on the 15th took 901 of them to their native land. The port statistics of San Francisco show that the arrivals of Chi- nese <iuring the year ending November Ist, were 6,128, and departures 8,746—of whom 6,229 went to China, and 2,517 to Honolulu— the excess of departures over arrivals being 2,618. Itis estimated that there are 62,000 Chinese on the Pacific coast, which shows that this population is decreasing instead of incrensing, for when the anti-Chinese agita- tion was begun a few years ago, the estimate was 100,000. The total number of Chinese arrivals for the 20 years ending December, 1878, was 230,430, and the departures and deaths, 133,491. At this rate the Chinese will guon cease to trouble California workingmen.

Tucexperiment, ‘of using electric light at sea is, it seems to be fairly tried by the In- man Company on one of its steamships, and if the experiment succeeds all the steamers of the (ompany will be fitted with it. Of course other ocean steamship companies would be pron pt to follow the example, and before anotiier year passes we may seo the electric light come into-uuiversal use on the ocean. There cau be no doubt that the adoption of the electric light at sea toa very low minimum. Such a disaster as happened afew days ago to a Charleston steamer, or such an accident as the running of @n ocean steamer into an icelerg could not possibly have taken place if the electric light had been in use. ‘,

My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three botiles. Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third. I quit taking it, feeling quite clear of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head.
