Complaint is made on all sides that female help is not available, and that while our farmers wives are over- werked, our girls are taking the ‘“boats” for the States, Since better methods of dairying will prove more profitable, our farmers could afford to pay good wages to these girls if the latter were competent fo undertake the dairy work, and do it scientifically and well. Why not then edacate our girls, and at once give them employment that will keep them? at home, and relieve our dairy- women from the undue work falling to them while improving our butter pro- duct generally, and to the extent of pay- ing this extra cost to the farmer?

New Steamship Line for St. John.

St. John has set to work in earnest te make its port one of Canada’s winter out- lets, and while Halifax puts its faith in the Allans, St. John follows the example set by Charlottetown and Annapolis, and has pro- cured direct steamship communication with England,by a line owned by 81. John men. At a meeting to-day of the stockholders of the new Steamship Company, Mr. Howard D. Troop submitted a report of the result of his visit to England, and the terms of coutract for the new steamer, of 3,000 tons, to be launched 15th June next. The con- traet was ratified. The company will be known as ‘“‘The New Brunswick Steam- ship Company, limited,” with a capital of ene million dollars. If sufficient business offers, two extra steamers will be put on the line immediately. Messra. Troop & Son will be the managers.

Spain and Cuba.

Seneral Pendergrast, the new Goveraor- General of Cuba, has had a brief interview with the King, and he says that he will start for Havana by the next mail steamer if he can get ready, or at the latest on November 10th. General Pendergrast says he thinks a liberal and conciliatory policy, humoring colonial ideas and free speech, can pacify the irritation developed by Gen- eral Blanco’s stupid resistance to the per- fectly loyal aspirations of the Ouban Liberals. He admitted the necessity of a tariff reform, but was reserved as to the extent he censidered feasible for them He obtained from Senor Sagasta the im- mediate release of the Cuban journalists who arrived by the last steamer under custody, by order ef General Blanco. and he seemed well-disposed to restore to liberty all Cubans detained in the Kuro- pean possesssions of Spain and in Ceuta.
