addressed several meetings and has been well received. Thirty county conventions in Iowa

have been declared for prohibition. The expectation is therefore warrented that | the Republican State Convention will | declare in the same manner. With this fall’s election the Te mperance people intend to sett’e finally the constitutiou— ality of prohibition.

Hon. Abram S. Hewitt, of New York, while ta Cleveland, said to a reporter: — lL believe thal nige-tenths of the crime | andmisery of the country are due to the use of alcoboi inone form oranotber and if necessary of reform I would, if possible, altogether prohibit the use of intoxicating liquors, The next best thing is to reguiate the traffic, and it is sadly ia need of regulation in this city. The high license system is the most precticable form of regulating the tra- fic. I belive thatif a license fee of $5,000 were charged theta great part of theevils flowing from the traffic, would in this city disappear.

At the Woman’s Sufferage Associa tien meeting held a few days ayo in Cleveland, one of the speakers said she theught the reason the woman’s sufferage move ment had lagged in Ohio was because the women had not made the necessary sacrifices. She spoke ot the work that bas been done and is being done tor the temperance cause by the woman of Ohio, and said it was the result ofa spirit of self-sacrifice. She said that the members of the Woman's Christian temperanee Union, in order to raise money to carry on the work, had agreed to go without gloves until after the October election, and donated the price of the same to carry on the work, and that the amount rea- lized in that way would foot up about $20,000.

Ex-Governor St. John says :—Pro- hibition is not a failure in Kansas. It is stronger to-day that ever before. In 1850; before our constitutional amendment, we bad 1,977 dram shops; 32 wholesale liquor-houses. Now, there are not over three hundred open saloonsand akout 700 secret “back sliey rum holes” in the State. Only in two of our largest cities are intoxica- ting liquors openly sold, Elsewhere it must be had on the sly. The brand of disgrace is upon the rumseller, and when one is arrested fora violation of the law and proven guilty Kansas juries in nine-tenths ofthe State are not afraid to find a verdict against him,nor are the officers to enforce the verdict. While Michigan hasone dram-shop to every 300 inhabitants, Kansas has one to every 1,1000. Pauperism and crime have rapidly been steadily decreasing in Kansas since the establishment of cen- stitutional prohibition, as shown by offi"ial statistics, while in every parti- cular of substantial wealth, prosperity and happiness of her people, she has steadily advanced.
