A Horse attached to a wagon belonging to Mr. Alexander Stewart of Union Road, was stolen off Great George street on Wednesday last. The horse which was driven almost to death, was discovered on the lower St. Peter’s Road, on Friday, by Mr. Joseph Marr, in whose charge lie new is.

Mr. Paut McPuant, of Bannockburn, lost a valuable horse on Friday night. He was returning from this city after dusk with two fine horses attached to a large express wagon. When near tlie premises of Theoph. Des. Brisay, Esq., the horses commenced kicking, and while so doing, one of the animals had a hind leg broken so badly that Mr. McPhail was obliged to kill it where it lay.

Tue advantage of elevated railroads as a method of rapid transit in cities has been gen- erally recognized fin the United Sta:es, and the system is soon to have a considerable ex- tension. The Pennsylvania Railroad Com- pany have begun to prolong their line by this means. The Reading Railroad is about to follow the example, and people of Pittsburg have applied to their Council for permission te construct an elevated track in their city. Other charters have been applied for in the same State. Boston also intends making ap- plication to the Massachusetts Legislature for a charter for an elevated railroad which will connect the Highlands and other outlying

Sir Hugh—Not until your people buid elevators, and make an ettort to make it a a shipping port. I may say that Hali- ax is not naturally a suitable port for ship- ping grain, but it can be made so by ar- tificial means. It never can become so, how- ever, until there is through connexion with Chicazo over Government Railways, with low rates. What is wanted is the purchase by the Government of the Quebee Shore Line, 80 they can make through connec‘ions with the grain markets, and carry it at low rates The people of Halifax must do the rest. We do not want“ to go to Boston or Baltimore, and would only be too glad to make this our winter port of destination when we can secure return cargoes. Until then we will have to continue our trips to American ports. }

E have great pleasure in informing our Customers that our first quarters business has been very satisfactory ; not only has the custom of our pre- decessor been maintained but largely augmented. The char- acter, style and prices of our Goods have given great satisfac- tion. We have still on hand a Good Stock of General and Fancy DRY GOODS, such as few houses here can show, and at prices that defy competition. Our DRESS MATERIALS, Mantles and Cloths of every description are having a good run, whilst our Fur Goods are going off in good style. At this season we would call special attention-to our beauti- ful stock of FANCY WOOL WORK—in every shape and form, besides Wools of every description.
