.were opened by Mrs. Lois Mac- Donald and the accompanying verses read by Miss Bessie Mac- Kenzie, while Miss Helen Crosby garranged the gifts on the table. Following this a delicious lunch wvas served to all present and the remainder of the evening was plensantlly spent in contests and social intercourse. (Patriot please copy).

SOCIAL GATHERING — A very enjoyable evening was spent at ithe home of Mr. and Mrs. Russell [Jones on Thursday. Sept. 26th. iwhen they entertained a number ,of friends at an evening of danc- ling and song. Snappy “Old-time" land modern music was furnished |by Mr. Andy Ramsay with the violin. accompanied by Mr. Wil- bert Gillespie with the harmonica and Mr. Robert Stevenson and Mr. Jones at the piano. Step-dancing by Mr. Gillespie and Mr. Steven- son was enjcgved by all. A delici- oua lunch was served by the hos- tess assisted by Mrs. Wood. Mrs. George Waller and Miss Margaret Lamont. A hearty vote of thanks to the violinst was moved by Mr. Charles Jones and seconded by Mr. Arnold Godfrey. After bounc- ing the host and hostess and giv- ing three rollicking cheers and a. tiger, everyone Joined in singing "For They Are Jolli- Good Fei- iows" and “Auld Ln"; sync". The singing of “God Save The King". brought a pleasant evcning to a! close and the guests dispersed to

The four billions spent for liquor last year. would have provided n $500 scholar- ship for every one of them, and there would still have been re- maining $200,000,000 for other edu- cational projects.

Exact figures on unemployment are hard to get, but ten million seems a reasonable estimate, in- eluding some who are on some form of relief. The four billons spent for liquor would provide an income of 00 per year for every one of these. We complain a good deal a- bout the costs of relief, but thus far little complaint has been reg- istered concerning the costs of the liquor business which puts so many men and women Oil relief.

$4.000 Home For pne Million Families

Four thousand dollars would build a much better hcme than a vast number of the American working men live in. and yet this liquor bill would build a four thousand dollar home for each of one mil- lion families. Consider the employ’- ment this would furnish to Am- erican workiugmen, and the stimulus it would offer to Ameri- can business.

The annual community chest campaign in the average city is an anxious period. A vast amount of community service is dependent up- on the question, "will they raise it?" 1n the city of Los Angeies, tho fifth city in the United States, the amount asked is $3,000,000 which re- presents a mmlnimum for opera ng the nearly one hundred agenc es. Raising this amount is always a gigantic task. Yet the annual drink bill of the nation would provide a $6,000,000 community chest fund (twice the present amount) for each of the fifty largest cities of Am- erica, a $3,000,000 chest for the next fifty, a $1,000,000 chest for the next one hundred, and a $200,000 chest for the next one thousand cities of America. $100,000 For 5,000 Hospitals For Free Service Build 1,000 $250,000 For Each
