the annals of crime occurred on the last voyage of the ship | Owen Williams, from the African coast to Liverpool. Lt} appears that a .ew days before her arrival, one of the hands, | John Simmonds, a Manilla boy, had been gailty of some act | of insubordination or theft, and to eseape punishment he took | to the rigging, carrying with him a marliv spike. He was summoned to descend, aud on refusing to do so, a seaman was gent after him. Afier chasing him about the yards and | shrouds for some time, he was on the point of effecting his| capture, when the lad tarned sharply round and struck him | a vivient bow on the head. The man fell unon the deck a} corpse. The young rufian was again summoned to surrender | himself, but he pers sted in maintaining his elevated position, | where he remained the whole of the night. On the following | morning several blank eatridges were fired at him, to in-| timdate him into dossenling, but these not having the | Gesived effect, a louded pistol was next fired, and the bail | taking effect, the lad came tumbling down the rigging. The wound caused by the shot was not ofa serious moment, but | in the fall his collar-bone was broken, and he sustained | gevera! severe contusions. On the vessel's arrival in Liver- poo! he was conveyel to the Northern Hospital, where he will} remain until sufficiently recovered to be handed over to the | polive authorities.
