PUBLIC? MEETING AT SOURIS.

Ata Public meeting held in the house of Mr. i M‘Isaac, Souris, on Friday, the Ist Sept., 1848, Alexan.| der Leslie, Esq.,in the chair, for the purpose of dis.’ countenancing drunkenness and promoting ‘Lemper- ance, and to arrive at the effectual means of attaining) these ends. After hearing several addresses and sug- gestions on the subject, Mr. James M‘Farlane having been appoiuted Secretary, the following Resolutions were moved and carried:

1. Moved by Mr. Donald Beaton, seconded by Mr. James M‘Farlane.

Resolved, That this Meeting being sorrowfully sensi- ble of the numerous evils and cases of distress, in many families in this District, caused by a too free and frequent use of ardent spirits, and being desirous to re- move at least one plague spot from this otherwise thriv- ing section of the Colony, the members of this meeting are to exert themselves individually and collectively, as far as their example and influence can go, to discourage Drunkenness, and to promote ‘Temperance.

2. Moved by Mr. Alexander Fraser, seconded by Mr.) John M‘Isaac.

Resolved, That the Merchants of the District in eon-' nection with this meeting, who now import Spirituous, Liquors, discontinue the importation thereof from this, day, and that they will cease to sell Intoxicating Liquors from and after the first day of November ensuing.

3. Moved by Mr. Donald M‘Donald, seconded by Mr. | James M‘Eachern.

Resolved, That should any person or persons uncon-| nected with this meeting, regardless of its proceedings, | and reckless of the well-being of society, sel] in this’ district any imported or Island manufactured Spirituous or Fermented Liquors after the first day of November| ensuing, this meeting by its Committee and individual) members, will use every legal and fair means to get such | sale discontinued.

4. Moved by Mr. John Knight, seconded by Mr. Fi-| dele Pacquett.

Resolved, That each individual of this meeting shall inform when he has the power, on all unlicensed retail-. ers of Spirituous liquors after the time specified in the. third Resolution, and that on conviction, the informer’s| share of the Fine be given either to the Poor of the’ District, or to the Treasury of the Island, as the Magis- trate who tries the case may think proper, unless de- manded by the informer, and should the informer be at any pecuniary loss, the members of this meeting pledge themselves to make good such loss, at their next meet- in

Resolved, ‘Mhat a Committe be appointed to see that these Resolutious be acted on, and call future Generel Meetings from time to time, as the same may appear necessary; and the Committtee to report its proceed- ings to such General Meetings.

6. Moved by Capt. M‘Isaac, seconded by Mr. Daniel Collins.

Resolved, That the District over which the Com- mittee’s operations shall more particularly extend, be the same as the Road Districts Nos. 13 and 14.

7. Resolved, That a Committee shall consist of the following persons, viz.:

Competition open to all; but persons receiving a Premium, to become a member of the Society for the ensuing year.

In order to afford accommodation for persons bringing Stock for competition across Montague and Cardigan Rivers, a large Flat or Scow will be provided, worked by two men, to ferry, free of charge, such Stock and a person attending them, com- ing and returning on the mgat the Fair.

Mutual Insurance.--Notice.

HER Majesty the Queen having been pleased to give

the Royal allowance to the act passed at last Session of the Legislature entitled An Act to Incorporate a Mutual Fire Insurance Company—Notice is hereby given, that in pursuance of the Eleventh Section thereof, a members’ Book will be opened at noon on Monday the Second day of October next, at the Office of the Hon. Charles Young, where the Subscribers, or any three of them, shall receive and take the amount of property in- tended to be Insured by such person or persons as to become Members of the said Company, and also the sum of Fifteen Shillings as a Deposit from each person ; which Deposit shall be allowed in part payment of the first premium of Insurance, and shall be forfeited if the person shall neglect or refuse to take out a Policy with-
