This is the sixth SUN this term, and each one has brought our staff the satisfaction of a job completed. Unfortunately, we have also felt frustration, frustration, from mistakes made. Mistakes are bad anywhere, but in the newspaper business they are especially irritating. That is because once the paper is in print they are beyond -correction. >They simply settle within the pages

This editorial has been inspired by specific blunders in last week's SUN. The first of them, we're told, has upset the home economics department. The faux pas in ‘ question was‘in the article entitled, "Dalton Hall Meals." There appeared a sentence which read, "As the home economics students are leaving the managerial process and intricate workings of a food service behind, you will be able to dine in style for just the costs of ingredients and preparation." Does that make sense? Maybe so, but it should read this way. "As the home economics students are learning the managerial process and intricate workings of a food service business, you will be able to dine in style for just the costs of ingredients and preparation." That was mistake number one, and we hope that now we have properly corrected it.

The second.major error was on the same page. It was in the Fall Fest Schedule, just where we wanted it least. Whoever laid out the schedule (probably,the editor) omitted part of it. The result was the jumbling of Thursdays and Friday's events creating a confused and downright misleading situation. Hopefully we didn't spoil anyone's week—end, and.we assure everyone that it won't happen again, at least not during Fall Fest.

The secret in newspaper work is to minimize mistakes. Gripping that secret is one goal of the SUN, and it is a goal which may eventually be reached. Pat Ingraham, Lachlan MacQuarrie, and the rest of our staff are helping us get there. Pat's typing is frequently flawless, and the copy she doesn't handle is carefully scanned by Lachlan and our other proofreaders. Some errors survive this process, but we usually don't make the same ones twice in a row. At least we're learning.

Not often do newspapers acknowledge mistakes, but there you go, the SUN has done it. Our redeeming qualities are that we try to correct ourselves and that we invite our readers to join both the SUN and the struggle to improve it. If we're lucky maybe someday the eagle at the bottom of this page won't be necessary.‘ -
