The Thimble.

The name of this little instrument is said to have been derived from *‘thumb- bell.” being at first *‘thumble,”’ after- wards “thimble.” It is aDutch invention and was brought to England about the year 1605 byJohu Lofting. Formely iron and brass were used, but lately steel, silver and gold have taken their places. In the ordinary maoufacutre, thin plates of metal are introduced intoadie and punched into shape.

In Paris gold thimbles are manufac- tured toa large extent. Thin sheets of sheet iron are cut intodies of about two inches diameter. These being heated red-hot, are struck with a punch into a number of holes, gradually in- creasing in depth, to give them proper shape. Thethimble is then trimmed, polished and indented arouod its outer surface with anumber of little holes by

means Of a small wheel. It is then con- verted into steel by the cementation process, tempered, scoured, and brought to the color. A thin sheet of gold is then introduced into the in- terior, and fastened to the steel by means ofa polished steel mandrel. Gold leaf is then applied to the outside, and attached to it by pressure,the edges being fastened to asmall groove made to receive them. The thimble is then ready tor use, and finds a ready market. me
