TIPENDIARY MaGistrate’s Covurt.—At the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court yester- (ay morning George Anderson was fined $2.00 or 8 days for drank and incapable. Jobn Arnold for vagrancy, was discharged Isabella Lewis on complaint of William Harper for abusive language. In this case the evidence produced showed that the plaintiff was as much in fault as the defendant ; consequently Harper was fined $1.00 or 8 days with costs, and Mrs, Lewis $1.00 or 8 days without costs. +r C—O

l'ire.—The fire alarm was again sounded yesterday afternoon. This time the fire proceeded from the house formerly owned by. the late Mr. Cross, and now occupied by Ars. Trowan. It is supposed that some Spats from the cnimney lighted upon the roof. ‘The blaze, which was quickly dis- ®overed, was put out by the application of ® few buckets of water. The Fire Depart- ment turned out in force, and there was the sual swarming of anxious sight-seeing Citizens, but fortunately there was no necess sity for the one, nor “ sight’’ for the other. Chere was considerable complaint on the part Of citizens of the East end because “Tremont Engine,” which was nearest the “ene of the fire and first on the ground, W4s Unprovided with hose. NwaRLy 4 Patan Accipenr.—Last night about ten o'clock, while John Hatch, crier, was in the act of carrying a scutileful of! ashes from his apartment in the third story of the Fire Bell Tower he missed his step at the top of the last flight of stairs and fell headlong to the bottom, a distance of about eighteen feet. Parties on the Oppo- site side of the street were attracted by the noise of him bawling, and on arriving at the door found him lying with his head downwards and the blood flowing from bis mouth. Dr, Jenkins was immediately sent for, and on arrival had him removed to his room. Mr. Hatch is injured very much about the head, ° > - + Peters’ Compination Lock.—Mr. A. E. Peters, the inventor of this very useful article, is on a visit to this city, and yes- terday exhibited to many of our influen- tial citizens the working of his mortice- door, rim, latch, chest, trunk and drawer locks,—which are operated without keys. They are all absolutely burglar proof, as Mr. Peters very fully demonstrated. They are operated with great certainty, and as quickly as any of the ordinary kind. Mr. Peters has been engaged for upwards of two years in perfecting his lock, and has recently made arrangement; to manufac- ture it extensively, so that it can now be supplied ata much cheaper rate than

compete, At no very distant day persons will feel insecure unless their premises are fully protected by these valuable articles. The post office lock shown by Mr. Peters is a very ingenious and complete con- trivance. [t should soon be supplied to the Charlottetown Post Office. It is the only keyless Post Office lock known.

New York, July 31, The strike prospects are growing bright- er. The war is practically finished. The workmen are resuming operations,

Rumors of a strike prevail at New Or. leans, but the Government is prepared and determined to put down rioting the bud, Affairs. in the mining region in Pensyl- vania continue in a very deplorable state. The strike on the Wisconsin, Kansas and Texas road has terminated; the company will gently concede the strikers’ demands. The Pensylvania road moved all its east bound freight from Pittsburg yesterday (Saturday). More engineers, firemen, and pump men of the Deiaware and Hudson Co, struck and the mines are rapidly flooding. At Key, West Virginia, seven freight trains were atopped by strikers, first being wrecked, preventing others proceeding. Troops moved to the wreck, but strikers disappeared. At Dunmore fifty disguised men destroy~- ed the engine house and fired several other places and then fled. All work is now suspended in the mines and shops in Wyoming. and Lackawanna oe cuts off all means of shipment of coal by Pennsylvania road, A London despatch says the market is excited and depressed throughout. There are fears of a general European war which will involve England.
