Bay« Srock.—Several shares in the stock of the Bank of Prince Edward Island were sold at auction by the Deputy Sheriff this forenoon. The price they realzied was $145 each, or 45 per cent. premium. This is, we believe, the highest price obtained for bank stock within a ycar; and the fact shews that the ‘‘old bank” retains, in a large measure, the confidence of the people.

A Barwutayt Mergor.—On Monday even- ing, the L6th inst., about five minutes before eight o'clock, a brilliant meteor was seen over this city, bearing east-north-east, at an altitude of about thirty degrees. When first seen it was in right ascension, twelve hours and twenty-one minutes— Polar distance forty two devgrees,—moviny twards right ascension fourteen hours and forty-two minutes—Polar distance tw -utv-eight degrees—where it. ex- pleded anc! lisappeared. The are thus tra- versel be':s twenty four degrees, in three seconds, It shone with a vivid white light, appearing about one-third of the moon’s diam- eter. It exploded in « burst of red leaving no perceptible trace.

Fresh Troubles Anticipated in Af- ghanistan.

It is also be- lieved that numerous Sepoys of the Ameer’s army will follow suit. Tar beet-root sugar enterprise in Maine has failed. The sugar-makers caunot make ita paying business. the farmers will not buy back trom the factory the beet refuse at the prices required, and will not sell beets to the factory at a sufficiently low rate to make up for the loss to the factory caused by the non- sale of refuse.
