SOCCER TEAMS TRIUMPHANT IN UCCB TOURNEY

Both the men’s and women’s Panthers emerged from the last weekend having bettered them- selves against worthy oppo- nents in Cape Breton. The women. returned home with a perfect 2-0 record following two shutout wins against the Capers, whereas the men came back on the second day, blitzing the Capers for five goals on Sunday, and proving them- selves the better team after a scoreless tie on Saturday. the uncooperative weather and scored once in each half, send- ing a definitive message to the defending champion Capers: they were going to have to work harder on Sunday if they wanted to even the weekend series.

Unfortunately for Cape Breton fans, they would fare lit- tle better on the 19th. Rachael Murphy had her second goal of the weekend from a corner from Connolly. It would prove to be the only goal of the game, despite the Caper’s out-shout- ing of the Panthers, including a bullet which rang off of the post in the 62nd minute.

Amy Connolly’s strong midfield play all week- end was attributed as having helped lead the team to both wins. Also notable was Kim Swan’s strong defensive play against her former team in her first game as a Panther.

On the men’s side, poor Conditions on Saturday saw the game suffer its way to end as a Scoreless tie. On Sunday, how-

ever, the men exploded for five goals, three of which came dur- ing the first 25 minutes of the game. Scorers included Matt Thompson, Adam Foster, Ryan Anstey, Martien Hakkers, and Musa Kargbo, a new and impressive rookie, capped it off with a goal in the 84th minute. °

Both teams continued to impress, with the girls defense dominating opponents, having only allowed 2 goals in their last five games. In contrast, the men have destroyed opponents offensively, having scored 14 goals in their last three games. (Additional information from upeipanthers.com)

With the NHL lockout now in effect, in my columns I will try to inform readers on what to look forward to and comment on what has happened in the world of sports.

As the Major League Baseball season slowly starts to wind down, some of the playoff races are starting to heat up. The Braves, Cardinals, and Twins have all but clinched their respective divisions and the Rangers and Angels continue to chase the A’s in the AL West. The Giants are 444 games back of the Dodgers in the NL West but they are still in a very tight race for the NL Wildcard. After closing to with- in two games of the Yankees, the Red Sox are begin- ning to show their true self and slip off that map, how- ever they are still expected to win the AL Wildcard. Oh yeah...and the Blue Jays have no chance. Barry Bonds as now become only the third player in MLB history to have reached 700 career home runs. Keep an eye on him as he chases Hank Aaron and the Babe.

In golf, just two weeks after Canadian golf fans still try to swallow Mike Weir’s choke in the final round at the Canadian Open, the Ryder Cup was being held in Michigan...a state really not known for its golf. It is a tournament that means absolutely nothing to Canadian golf, but the American choke was compara- ble to Mike Weir, so at least they can’t gloat.. ..But you should hear the people in Fiji. In hockey...oh...right, sorry. In football this week, there is probably a bunch of CFL games. That is the extent of my CFL knowledge. But in the NFL on the other hand, a football league that is not a joke, it should be a pretty entertaining Sunday and Monday. I will make five predictions. I’m going against Deion Sanders’ loud mouth and will take the Steelers to win. Denver is just to strong for Jacksonville. Denver to win. Washington could be big this season. Redskins over Giants. I believe Seattle could be contenders for the Superbowl. Seattle to beat Tampa. As for the Monday nighter, which should be a great one, Philly over the Vikings....3 1-17.

Philly beat Minnesota, 27-16. That’s a pretty good one. Seattle also beat Tampa, however, it goes down- hill from there. The Giants beat the Redskins, Jacksonville beat Denver, and the Pittsburgh Steelers lost to the Ravens. Leave the predictions to Justin, and the advice to me....and I advise you to hold off on that Pro-Line if you’re following his picks.

NHL LOCKOUT HERE TO STAY

Bobby Orr has condemned it, Don Cherry has denounced it, and Wayne Greztky has refused to get involved. Nike has begun to make commercials about it. Half of the Montreal Canadiens’ roster has left to go overseas, or is seriously considering it. They even took down the boards and tore up the ice from the Bell Centre. The OSHL, cancelled after a meager two games, was the most embarrassing thing to happen to hockey since Darcy Tucker. As teams have begun to cancel games and rent out arenas, it seems the NHL lockout will be around for a very long time.

Will all of the NHL teams survive the lockout? Canadian hockey fans are calling for a renewed fran- chise in Winnipeg, as numbers provided by Gary Bettman claim franchises such as Pittsburgh, Florida, and Columbus won’t survive without a $31 million salary cap and at least some salvaged portion of the 2004-2005 season.

But a $31 million salary cap? What can you do with that? I have put together two rosters that I believe could operate on a $31 million dollar cap like that:

TEAM I:

Right wing/Left wing/ Centre: Jaromir Jagr ($16 mil- lion a year)

Defense: Alexei Yashin ($ 15 million a year)

Goalie: The poor bum outside the stadium (Food scraps from the canteen)

TEAM 2:

Right Wing: Donald Audette ($2 million a year to pay off medical bills)

Centre: Igor Larionov ($2 million a year, plus addition- al $2 million bonus for being the only 85 year old in the NHL)

Left Wing: Brad May ($3 million a year, I love this guy) Defense: Mike Commodore ($4 million a year)

Filip Kuba ($2 million a year)

Goalie: Andre “Red Light” Racicot ($100,000 a year, plus $900,000 signing bonus, plus $15 million to con-

Hey, I still think it would be more fun to watch than the OSHL, which boasted scores like 16-13. Like old Red Light would ever let such a thing happen to him! Ha, ha!

As a more reasonable and serious alternative to NHL hockey, I would advise those of you who are feel- ing starved to head out to some Rocket games or even minor hockey, which can have serious. entertainment value, not to mention some excellent fights and vicious penalties — you'll hardly be able to tell the difference from the real NHL!
