Millers in Session.

Toronto, July 15, Che Ontario Oatmeal Millers Association have been in sessiou here yesterday and to-

day It was decided to organize a gigantic Company with the ostensible capital of $30,000, composed of all the leading

millers in Canada for the purpose of con tréiling the trade and fixing prices. A charter has obtained and $15,000 stock has been already subscribed, but very little of this stock will be called. The Company is being formed more for the purpose of controlling the trade than for paying dividends.

Hon. D. Gordon’s Address.

AN esteemed correspondent sends the following report, supplementary of THe IXAMINER'S report published yesterday.

Of the public men present on the occasion there were besides His Hsnor the Lieut.- Governor, Hon. Mr. Bentley, Commissioner of Public Works, John Ball, Esy. Clerk of the Legislative Council, Cyrus Shaw, Esq., M. P. P., Hon. jJames Clow, M. L. C., many of the leading men of King’s County were also present, and when the ceremony of laying the corner stone was performed by the Hon. D. Gordon,the scene was quite an impressive one,

SUMMARY OF GORDON'S ADDRESS.

Hon. Mr. Gordon in laying the corner stone, delivered an eloquent and interesting address, showing why the ceremony of lay- ing the chief corner stone of public build- ings is necessary and beneficial. He said that in former ages many great cities had become extinct and no records had been preserved of their existence. He referred to the labors of such men as Layard, Raw- linson and Schielmann who, in endeavoring to discover the mysteries of the past, had expended great tressure and labored many long years in trying to tind out the history

of the cities of earlier ages. The papers, documents and coins’ that would be deposited in the founda- tions of the present building will show to future generations that the building had been erected in the present

year; and the new building would be a fit- ting monument of the stability, justice, and vdvancement of the reign of Her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen, who had been spared for over fifty years to sway the des- tinies of the most mighty empire the world ever saw. He hoped that the building to be erected would be one always noted for the justice of the verdicts given by those called on to administer the law; and that the progress made in the Province in gen- eralf and Georgetown in particular, during the next fifty years, would be so great that future generations might be able to recount with pride the development that had taken

place. In the corner stone were deposited the Public Records for the year

1886, copies of the Island newspapers, the Halifax Morning Herald and Hvening Mail, and Daily Chronicle, and the coins current in the Deminion.

Hon. Mr. Gordon having concluded his address, the large stone was slowly lowered into its place, while the children sang an appropriate ode, accompanied by music from the band and organ.

Owing to the very high wind that blew, the regatta did not come off, and « good deal of disappointment was felt, although no blame was attached tothe committee. At night many of the houses were illumi- nated, and fireworks were bursting and whizzing and fizzing on every side. One of the best parts of the day’s proceedings was the very good order that was kept, and hardly a drunken man could be seen. Taking the whole affair through, it was highly creditable to the managing com- mittee and to the people of Georgetown.

We omitted to make particular mention of the salute of 21 guns fired by the George- town Battery, accompanied by a feu de joie of musketry fired by the militia.

Tue shoddy pedlar is abroad with his little lot of cheap cloth, old-fashioned shawls, gaudy dress goods, and fancy little table eloths. As usual, he sells for thirty dollars a quantity of goods which the purchaser could obtain at the nearest village store for ten dollars, but for the fact that the average shop- keeper would not keep such goods on his shelves, knowing that if he did he could never sellthem. The pedlar will be paid with a note of hand, good atthe bank for cash, while the village shopkeeper will be asked to wait for his pay till the butter money comes in, or to take it in cordwood next March. The shoddy pedlar is almost in- variably a liar and a rogue. The shrewd farmer might be expected to make him move on. But he won't. He will allow the stranger to cheat him out of twenty-five dollars andwill then grumble over his four dollars and ninety- five cents school tax, though he has five children at school. The hardworking farmer is a good friend of Tuk EXAMINER and we re- spect him for his good sense and _ straightfor wardness. But he has his weaknesses and shoddy peddlars know them well. Therefore, though we warn the cottager and the artisan, and remind them that all these shoddy peddiars are frauds, and though the fact is generally so well known that any words seem to be superfluous, yet it will be in vain. The customer will go up and be cheerfully cheated.
