Prices, in general, are munch lower in this Island than they have been. A mer- ehant in high standing informs us that im- ported goods are now seld to our peeple at rates, on the average, at least twenty per cent. lower than they were in 1872, and wther years previous to Confederation. But we repeatedly hear complaints of over- charges on the part of hotel-keepers, livery-stable keepers, and others who do business for the travelling public. The ease of Messrs. Tue Customs officials of Prince County are making things somewhat lively for smugglers in that part of the Island. The schooners ** Break of Day” and *‘ Bay Queen” have been seized for alleged viela- tions of the Reverue Law—the former at Cascumpec and the latter at Richmond Bay. Certainly the potato plants look better when hilled up in the row; but if hilled potatoes do not yield so well, then beauty should, in this case, be sacrificed to utility.

A Woman's Desire for Liquor.

The danger cf tampering with liquor was recently exsmplified in the case of Mrs. Maria L. Judson, a young woman with an unusually intelligent face and a ladylike manner. She was recently arraigned in New York on a charge of being drunk and disorderly in a street car, She was born of wealthy and respectable parents. She re ceived a good education, and at the age of eighteen was married to a man named Jud- son, who is in the wholesale liquor business in Connecticut, and’ who is said to be worth from $200,009 to $300,090. For about eight years the couple lived happily toge- ther. The wife then began to acquire a taste for spirituous liquors. Eiforts were made by her husband to save her from the fate which threatened their happinesz, but ie failed; the result was their separation, A divorce was secured subsequentiy by the neitand, who, hewever, kept hiimself.in- formed of his wife's mede of living. Find- ing that she was leading a sober life, and through the perseverance of friends, he had the decree of Givorce set aside, and was re- married to his wife.
