The Steamer Quebée, 2,700 tons, of the Dominion Line, which sa‘led from Portland for this port on the Ist of January is over. due nineteen days. She was spoken on the 12th January in latitude 45 north, longtitude 20 west, in distress. It is feared she has been lost.

A a from Col. Plewart shows the falsity of recent alarmist rumors relative to the state of affairs in the Soudan, Upper pt. Colonel Hicks and other British officers selected for service in the Soudan will leave Suez for that country on Wed- neaday next, and until their arrival the Egypt general will not undertake any mili- tary operations beyond concentrating troops at Khartown.

The steamer reported on the 28th inst., wrecked near Swansea was ths ‘‘Agnes Jack,” bound from Sardinia with lead. Witnesses of the disaster were unable to render any assistance. The crew, number- ing twelve men, were swept one by one from the masts. The steamer was out of reach of rockets and unapproachable by boats. All hands perished including the captain, who itis believed stripped for the purpose of swimming ashore.

Mr. Davitt, in a speech at a meeting of the National League at Cork, on the 28th inst., said he could not help feeling that the most God-like act a man conld perform would be to complete the crushing of the hideous power of landlordism. If Glad- stone conld give a legislative blow to land- lordism, his name would be beloved by every generation of the liberated victims. In conclusion, he said that co-Irish land- lordism and castle rule were being beaten inch by inch.

The North German Guz:ite gives the text of a letter from the Emperor William to the Pope, dated December 22nd. After hearty returning of good wishes expressed in the letter from the Pope to the Emperor, the latter declares that the Pope’s letter has strengthened his hope that the satis- factien felt by the Pope at the re-establish- ment of the Prussian legate at the Vatican will afford grounds for his Holiness to re- ciprocate by similar advances. The Em- peror believes the advance made by the Vatican in regard to the duty of giving notice of ecclesiastical appointments to the Government is even more to the interest of the Catholic Church than to the State. If the Emperor were convinced that his de- sires for an understanding were recipro- cated, he would be able to concede that the Diet should reconsider the May laws, which are not permanently required for the maintenance of peaceful relations with the Vatican.
