This statement is not true, there being no net set across the stream this summer; but having # net set on that day was perfectly in aceordance with the law. His next

statement is the stream was alse thick with saw-dust. This is utterly untrue. Emmore River Mill is fitted up for catching

the saw-dust as. well as any mill on the Island, and there has not been any in thisstream thissummer. Sheep River Mill is also fitted up, and the sawdust ,carted away. Again, your correspendent ‘asks whose duty it is to stop the netting and see that the sawdust does not ge into the rivera? If he had asked that question while at Eomere River, any one eonld have ‘told him ; for we have a fishwarden here, ‘and one that does his duty without fear or favor.

Dear Srr,—I notice in your paper of 15th inst., a communication frem a corres- pondent signing himself ‘‘ A supporter of the Government” wherein it is stated that ‘*‘liquer is sold at Vernen, Orwell, and Mount Stewart, in Queen’s County,im open contempt and defiance of the law.”

Now, Sir, se far as Orwell is concerned, I believe your correspondent is misinferm- ed. There has been asort of Vigilance Committee appointed here, whose duty it is te make -known not only the names of venders ef intoxicating liquors, but also the names ef those who drink it to excess ; and frem ali that ean be gleansd, there has been no liquor seld at Orwell during the past six months,

But Sir, I am serry to state that there is

Perhaps the Government do not deseerve any encomiums for the manner in which they have handled the liquor laws of this Province ; neither do they, in my humble opinion, merit mueh eensure. I consider that if ‘‘ A supporter of the Government ” would attribute a goodly share of the illicit sale of ram in Queen’s County to the timidity of some J. Ps., the ignorance of others, and the drunkenness ef a few, he would be much nearer the mark.

An Appeal for Protection.

The Post directs attention to an arti- cle in the Quarterly Review intended to show from statistics that British manu- factures are declining, and that foreign- ers are competing successfully even in the English markets, in consequence of the system of free trade. The Post says: ‘« These facts deserve the most consider- ate attention of every man having the future prosperity of the country at beart. The United States, under a system of rotection, paid during sixteen years over £150,000,000 debt, and £20,000,000 last year. Under it the United States have passed by leaps and bounds into a condition of prosperity which before long will enable them to cancel the enormous debt incurred on account of the civil war. England is by no means in the same hopeful condition. Free trade has done much to benefit the country, but we doubt whether it has not been pressed too far ; whether it has not become imper-

ative to resort to retaliatory duties.” —— .- oe -—

Nine-teaths of the crimes committed in Italy, accerding to Signor Selopis, the eminent statesman, have their origin in the drinking shops, while Mrs. Mario states that in Milan alone thirteen hun- dred individuals are yearly taken to the hospitals in various stages of deliriwm tremens—a pretty fair, record fora ‘wine \drinking” country, once so free from the grosser forms of intoxication, and a pretty strong argument against the mem- bers of the Senate who wish to “‘amend ” the Scott Act on the ground that light liquors are a protection against drunken-

FLOUR,

A Galt, Ont., circular of the 15th inst., states that the grain and flour trade for the week has been quiet, principally owing to the very small offerings, especially in flour, which were altogether insufficient for the demand. The weather is very favorable for the fall wheat harvest. There is little flour offering in Galt at present. A considerable export trade has been done during the week and a much improved tone prevails. Spring Extra is queted in Galt, at $5.20 to $5 25; Exira $5 50 to $5.55; and Superior Extra, at $5.60 to $5.65. The Montreal Flour Market was on Saturday last quiet, but prices remained firm. The stock of flour in store there, was reduced sume 6,000
