(*****) GABRIEL — PETER GABRIEL (ATco)

As the leader of Genesis Peter Gabriel was one of the recognized major talents of the music- in— dustry. In some respects

.it came as no surprise when

he announced he was leaving the group to concentrate on a solo career. To many, Genesis was simply the vehicle whereby Gabriel was. presenting his own music anyway. Genesis' first post-Gabriel album, Wind and Wuthering showed that Gabriel wasn't the only creative force in the band. His own solo work, though, certainly points out that Gabriel on his own is just as good as Gabriel with Genesis.

'Ihere's not a lead track to be found here, and considering the variety of styles present, that's an even greater compliment. xMy favorites are the ' acoustic flavoured "Solsburg Hill" and "Here Comes The Flood", with " mdnmm" close behind. 'Ihe up—front rockers are "Modern Love" and "Slow— burn" , with avante—garde rock represented by "Moribund 'Ihe Burgermeisrer" and "Down rl'ne Doloe Vita". That leaves "Waitin' For The Big One" and "Excuse Me", songs I'm not even going to attempt to categorize, except to say they are unusual and extremely involved. Bob

Ezrin' s masterful production,

job comes into fOCUS particularly on these two songs. As a solo debut, Peter Gabriel couldn't have come up with a better album.

With Classics such as "Rock 'N Roll Hootdnie Koo',‘

and "Teenage love Affair" included, I thought

Derr' r Live Would be a killer elpee. As it turns out, even these songs come off poorly and the others on the album are simply useless. The band Derringer had behind him when this set was recorded have now becare a part of history and its just as well. Their previous release, Sweet Evil, was the most unmpressive

album Rickderringer has ever had anything to do with. Derrinf' r Live cnly continues that pattern.

Since "love to Love You, Baby", very little in the way of important music has been issued by Donna Summer. You might immediately question the tee of "important" in describing that song, but it was. The song went a , long way in establishing disco music as a viable product, as well as break- ing down a lot of barriers concerning its lyrical content. met disco hits contain questionable material and phrases, so when Summer's "love To Love You, Baby" achieved air play it ' cleared the way for the others. If "Iove...'." could make it, so could "Do It Till You're Satisfi " and "Nbre More Mare".

'Ihis latest release, I‘ Remember Yesterday, is — important for two reasons. First, Summer has effectively molded the styles of the past into the disco sound. Other artists have attempted to update past classics into disco hits with very little success. On side one, Summer covers the thirties with "I Remember Yesterday"

- the Phil Spector years with

"Love's Unkind" and the Supremes on "Back In Love Again". All are originals, each making no attempt to hide who their inspiration was, but instead intended as tributes. Each song having its own identity is

'Ihe second reason for the importance of this record is found on side two. "I Feel Love", with its ~

. thumping synthesizer tradc,

is the song that has finally established synthesizer music on AM radio. It is the first , song to any extent that has garnered a large sales response, relying entirely on the synthesizer as the lead instrument. Kraftwerk have tried in the past and Hot Butter aren't even worth considering. ’ Donna Summer's success with "I Feel Love" can be con— 1 tributed mainly to Georgis

as king of electronic disco. Besides this record, he's also done work on three other current albums, including his first soloproject.

All in all, I Remember Yesterday is a very welcate surprise.

Fosterchild is a five piece band from Western Canada who are aiming at the AM market camercially‘ acceptable

material never becomes "heavy", but instead . maintains a constant level of "Eagles—like" rock. "Magic Is In 'me Air" and "Christine" are the two most successful cuts.

Much of the remainder of the album leaves little impression. 'Ihe scngs aren't bad; they're jLet not that exciting

either. As a debut effort Fosterchild could have been improved upon.. May—- be their second album, due soon, will turn the trick.

.'Iheir» debut album of last year, ._8_._5_. was a‘ killer initial effort but the band has changed course with their second, leveled. 'Ih‘e sixties ' "punk" band of the first album has turned into the seventies hard rock band on their second. Another heavy rock band is some— thing' we do not need.

(****) AGAIN - GREG KIHN (BE‘SERKLEY) -

'lhis is a four man band - from California who specialize in the rock 'n roll sounds of the early 60's via original material.

The one exception is Buddy Holly's "Love's Made A Fool Of You" , .lost nothing in the translation. Other engaging cuts are "Island" and "Politics",

. both of which revolve

around "love" although _ their titles would- sugges suggest other topics.
