In the late Dominion rifle maiches Nova Scotia carried off $164 in prizes ; Ontario, $1,763 ; Quebec, $1,019; New Brunswick, $244 ; P. E. Island, 147; and Manitoba 35.

THe Go-as-you please match between Mr. Eph Clow, and an Unknown, takes place at Ludlow Hall, Summerside, on Sept. 22, 23, and 24th for $100 a side. The money was put up yesterday.

On Saturday last a fleet of 104 vessels of all sizes, was at anchor in Picton harbor, Such a fleet had not been seen since the palmy days of 1862-63. Our readers can judge says the Standard, by this ‘‘specimen brick” of the injury to the coal trade wrought by the N. P,

A HEAVY GALE prevailed along the coast of Nova Scotia on the 8th inst., in which the brig ‘‘ A. McLeod,” of Charlottetown, was considerably injured. She arrived in Halifax on Tuesday with fore and main topmasts, foretopgallantmast, various sails and head-gear and best part of her deck load of lumber missing.

The Atheneum says that the publication of the revised version of the New Testa- ment will not take place until the spring of 1881, when the Greek texts which ore being prepared for the universies by Archdeacon Palmer, and Prebendary Scribner, will, no doubt, be completed. The editorial work, as regards the revised English version, has been intrusted by the universities, we believe to the Rev. J. Troutbeck, the secretary of the New Testa- ment Company.

THE Ottawa Citizen says:— ‘‘ As to a fall session there is no reason to believe that it is a settled question at all, even if the mews published is true. It is unlikely that any company can preceed with the work before spring; and the season opens so late that plenty of time would be left for the usual session to take place and for ratification of the bargain to be made if it pleased Parliament to ratify it. Nevertheless, in the event of the negotia- tions having reached the point reported, Sir John Macdonald may desire to give the public and Parliament the very earliest op. portunity cf knowing and discussing the details of a mattor so important te every man in Canada.

Tue Monetary Times, speaking of the success of the Pacific Railway negotiations in London, says:—‘‘ The news of this bar- gain, is, financially, the most important pieze of intelligence to this country that has ever reached the public ear. It will remove the oppressive fear that successive governments had pursued a pvlicy which threatened to end in national bankruptcy. it we get the read mainly for the land, we get it for what we have to give, and we are not piling up burthens on future generations which they could ill afford to bear. The company which gets the land will make it valuable by making it acces- sible; and thus the transactions will mutu. ally benefit beth contracting parties.”

B., 6 steam pumps, the largest 12x24 inch water cylinder, and 18 inch steam cylinder, for supplying the water for condensing the vapor arising from the liquid boiling in the

vacuum pan. They are also censtruct- ing the melter, the granulator, and

all the connecting machinery, including a bone-black duster and miscellaneous tubing and valves, &c. This in addition to the regular amount of mill work, &., con- tinnally in progress. The stoves manufac- tured by this Company must be increasing in favor, for we understand that larger or- ders than last year are now being filled. A cargo left for Cape Breton a few days ago,

A much more aggravated case here in every respect, only elicited the appreval of our Stipendiary. No fine, no imprisonment, no rebuke—even wher a threat was made in court to repeat the offence. Now, Mr. Editor, what about precedents? Which rule of court are we to be governed by? @r is the Statute Book to be laid aside and the Stipendiary to do just what he pleases ?

A numper of Russian dignitaries had a narrow escape from being blown into atoms by Nihilists, while on passage from Green- ock to London on the 13th inst. Amon the occupants of the train were the Grand Duke Constantine and Admiral Dopoff, ef the Russian Navy. By provideitial intere position the plot to blow up the train failed of accomplishment. It was near Busby, a station not far from London, some plate layers working on the track discovered, at a spot two hundred yards from the village, some fish plates which had been tampered with. Theforeman made an examination, which resulted in discovering that four pounds of dynamite had been placed under the plates. The ties of the rails had been removed, and dynamite placed underneath, The dynamite was connected with an india rubber tube, containing gunpowder. The locomotive in its passage cut this, but by an almost miraculous accident the percus- sion caps, which were intended to fire the dynamite, had been misplaced, and failed to explode, so that the train passed in safety over what would otherwise have blown the whole train and its passengers to pieces. The discovery was made a few minutes after the train passed,

FurtHEer Gop Discovertses,—The Hali- fax Herald says that within the past fort- night some very rich gold bearing boulders have been found at Salmon River, five miles west of Harrigan’s Cove, Halifax County. The excitement consequent upon the ‘‘ find’ has been very great, and no less than 1200 “‘ number one” areas have been takeu up in the vicinity—very largely

by old gold miners—within the last few days. A small crushing of ten tons of quartz, the first taken out of the large 36 in. lode at Harrigan’s Cove, belonging to Mr. C. F. Mott and others, has yielded doz. Gdwts., or about half an ounce to the ton. As the quartz frem this lode can be mined at less than #5 per ton, this is quite a satisfactory return, especially for the first crushing, and indicates in the opinion of good judges that good results from Harri- gan’s Cove may be expected.

1. Sell your building lots at reasonable prices.

8. If anything should be undertaken that may be of benefit to the town, do not speak ill of it to others because you happen to be prejudiced against it.

10. If you have any surplus money, do not spend it in far-off speculations, but give yourself and your town the benefit of it by establishing some protitable factory.
