Sir,—With about one-half the liberal voters falling over one another with peti- tions in a@ vain search for the coveted loaves and fishes the above question is a pertinent one. As yet we see no signs of the great change, notwithstanding the Free Trade party have been in power some menths. Work is scarce in the town. One factory employing a large staff has closed down. Rumor speaks ofa forge in the city where the fires have never been lighted since the 23rd of June, Master painters have become discouraged and will take a position on the dredge or “anything equal.” Shoemakers will accept a_ billet in the freight shed. Everywhere you sce signs ofastorm. Hundreds of men who have been longing for the good times promised by our Mr. Davies when the Lib- erals “got theirown” no sooner see the Jong wished for day, when “down tocls” (just the same as when the dinner bell sounds in a shipyard) and around the town they tear trying to take the bread and but- ver out of the mouths of their neighbors’ families. Ifthey had any faith in the promises and policy of thei¢ party, one would think they would stick to their trades, for were they not promised a ten dollar bi!l in place of the five dollar bijl they earned under Tory rule.

Sir,—I desire to offer a few remarks on thetugservice wherein you call theattention of the public to the incompetency of the Farquharson tug boat to perform the duty previously performed by one of Mr. Batt’s tugs.
Mr. Fe arquharson’s tug is not in my op- inion fit for any service. I noticed her when building and learned that the drafis- men designed her to meet the owner’s ideas of a mode! a steamboat ought to be. The boat has two good ends in both the forward and after sections, but she has no midship vearings withcutwhich no vessel can be
a good sea boat or can be forced through the water at an ordinary rate, let alone
drawing a vessel after her.
The designer has yet to learn the lesson novices can Only gain by experience. No one finds fault with the honorable gentle- man for testing hisdesign in the coastrue- tion of ship building, but I do think he has not acted generously in foisting this tug on his frieuds in the governmeut. ,
Before closing I take the liberty of point- ing out to the owners of the boat how she roay be made useful, viz, by adding one fourth of her leegth to her midship sec tion.
