tempered by the knowledge that if they were not treated fairly, there was not, at least, deliberate injustice in their case. We must congratulate King’s and Prince Counties—and particularly the Hon. James Clow and John Richards, Esquire—upon the success of their exhibits. It is pleasing and reassuring to know that the prize stock is confined to no particular section of the country, bui that every portion of it is in a position to send to the Provincial Exhibi- tion representative animals to compete in the judge’s ring and win prizes. It was, however, on the other hand, somewhat dis- appointing to find no Percherons or Hol- steins from Mr. Benjamin Heartz’s well- known stud and herd, no standard-bred animals from Parkside Farm, nothing from the farm of Mr. West at Kensington, no representative from many other first-class farms throughout the country. It was also disappointing to find nothing on exhibition from the second great interest of the Prov- ince, viz., the fishing interest. This inser- est brings to the Province hundreds of thousands of dollarsa year. It is surpris- ing, therefore, that, aided by a large grant from the provincial exchequer, the man- agement of the Exhibition could not afford a few dollars to expend upon prizes for its encouragement.

The arrangement of the buildings and the exhibits was excellent, reflecting great credit, m the first place, upon the Directors of the Exhibition Company, and in the next place, upon those whom they employ- ed todo the work. The arrangement of the buildings is, if we mistake not, largely the work of Charles C. Gardiner, Esq., who has devoted himself to the promotion of our agricultural interests, and to whom Prince Edward Island must everstand greatly indebted. The arrangements of roots and vegetables by Mr. R, R. Fitzgerald, Esq., of fruit by Mr. Brown, of flowers by Mr. Smallwood, was, every one says, really beautiful, while the Hons. Donald Fer- guson and Patrick Dlake, with their as- sistants, exerted themselves so success- fully in the stockyard that there was never ahitch. Altogether, the President and Directors exerted themselves most success- fully and creditably in this regard.

That (here were errors in some points of management, goes without saying. It could not be expected that perfection of arrange- ment would be reached on‘the first attempt of mere amateurs in the art of ** running an exhibition.” We hope it is not true that many of the exhibitors have gone home impressed with the idea that the Directors are more intent upon making money for their Company than in advancing the inter- ests of the country. If such an idea should get abroad it will be fatal to the success of Exhibitions by the Company in future years. We feel sure that it is nottrue. It is greatly to be regretted that visiting and local members of the press have had cause for complaint. But this will not, we are assured, occur again. The Secretary of the Exhibition, Mr. A. MeNeill, and his clerks—who have had experience in the business—-smoothed over difficulties for the reporters. But for special courtesies re- ceived from them, the prompt publication of the prize list would have been impossible.

A majority of the Directors have yet to learn, apparently, that the success of their

efforts depends entirely upon Providence, the People, and the Press, All three were very generous in this instance, and the result is the great success which we chronicle to-day.

Ee Tuz Reeatra.—The single scull shell race, postponed from Wednesday morning, was rowed yesterday afternoon, between five aad six o'clock, the New Glasgow crew coming in about three lengths ahead of the S. E. B. C. crew, in 17 min. and 5 secs. In the boys’ single scull race, Patk. Prunty, of the H. B. C., was the only one who ap- peared. He was sent over the course alone, and awarded the race. of whom it is impossible to make mention. The draught horses followed. Then the horses in carriages, headed by Mr. Me- Kie’s beautiful pair which took first priz at St. John as well as Charlottetown. Last, but in the estimation of the crowd not least, came the Liliputian mare of John Richards, Esq., with her fine little foal at her feet,and young Master Richards seated triumphantly upon her back. There was a round of applause as the trio passed the grand stand Altogether the continuous procession was an imposing

sight—one to impress the spectator with the fact that little Prince Ed- ward Island is a great place for

the breeding of horses. An old farmer

who has been in the old country, was

heard to say that a better horse show

could not, in his opinion, be made by any

country of the same size in the world. BLAKE BROS’. EXHIBIT.

Messrs. Blake Bros., of this city, added greatly to the completeness of the cattle show by their exhibit of eight magniticent fat cattle. Gne of these was a four-year heifer, pure-bred Durham, standing as high as a tall man, and weighing two thousand pounds. She was one of the great attrac- tions of the cattle show, and is certainly the largest and heaviest heifer ever shown in this Province. The steers, too, were a splendid lot, in fine condition. Alto- gether, Messrs. Blake Bros. deserve great credit for the special effort in this regard, as no prize was offered, and well merit the following ‘‘note” by the judge of cattle, Professor Shaw, of Guelph ;

“*T feel #t my duty to give more than a pass- ing notice to the splendid exhibition of fat cattle owned by Blake Bros. With their splendid large frame and fine quality they would do honor to the show ring of any country. I would therefore recoms.end that rocognition of this exhibit be made in some way by the society, either in the form of a diploma or otherwise, as may seem best to the directors.”

MILKING TEST.

There were three cows entered in the milk competition. The test depended upon the quantity of milk, the percentage of curd for cheese, and the cream. The cows entered, belonging respectively to Mr. Bell, Mr. MacInnis and Mr. Henry, were milked dry, under inspection, at six o'clock Thursday evening, and locked up over night, At six o’clock this morning they were again milked, under inspection, and the milk tested as follows: Total weight taken in each case. Equal parts of the milk of each cowjwere set,under like conditions, in ice water. ~ Three pounds in each case were also weighed and tested for cheese curd. The decision was made according to the total weight of milk, per- centage of curd, and cream. = The results were made known this after- noon, when the prizes were awarded as follows :

First—Mr. Bell, Jersey-grade cow.

Second—Mr. John Henry, Shorthorn- grade cow.

Third—Mr. §Hugh McInnis, Shorthorn- grade cow.

THE GALLOWAy HERD.

Professor Shaw referred specially to Hon. D. Ferguson's exhibit of Galloway cattle as follows :

“This herd gives evidence of purity of blood aud the most careful breeding, It {is well worthy the prize awarded it.”

A LIKELY HORSE.

In the 3-year-old race, it is only right to say that we have learned that the young stallion, Millionaire,fowned by,Mr.{James Byrne, which was started in this race, knocked the tendon of one foot in the show ring and was consequently not in proper condition for racing. Of course we do not know what he can do, but Mil- lionaire is a likely looking horse and we expect to hear a good report of him in the near future.

¥ The second prize for landscape oil painting and the second for animals in oil painting was awarded not to Ann Moore as stated yesterday, but to Amie Moore, daughter of Rev. F. W. Moore, of this city.

Over eight thousand people attended the Exhibition and the races yesterday.

Quirk Bros. did a roaring business at the Exhibitien the last two days and gave great satisfaction to the hungry sight- seer’s.

The exhibitors began to remove their things this afterncon, and the grounds are now pretty well cleared.

up our loss in any respect except in num- bers” These are strong statements, but uevertheless very true. They show a very serious state of aflairs, and one which, if not counteracted, must operate prejudicial- ly to the best interests of our schools. It is matter for great regret that, in general, experience on the part of the teacher is seldom or never taken into account. It is the survival of the cheapest rather than of the fittest. Is.it, then, a matter for wonder that 165 teachers leave the profession in one year, and seek employment in other channels? The number of teachers now sent out from Prince of Wales College is largely in excess of the demand, and the competition for vacancies lessens the salar- ies. In 1880 the average supplement paid to teachers was $26.00; in 1887 it was only about $17. This means an average reduc-

tion in the salaries of $18. Let the salaries of teachers be arranged on a sliding scale, increasing each

year for the first five years, and the de- serving and experienced would receive more encouragement. He repeated a sug- gestion made by him in his report for 1887, viz: ‘*‘That the standard for entrance

School be advanced, or the term in that Institution lengthened.” In making that suggestion he did not wish to find fault with the management of the College. Possibly the inadequacy of its accommo- dation had much todo with this matter. The fact remains, however, that the ac- cessions to the ranks of the teachers are not equal to theloss sustained, except in numbers. We should now have an annual educational exhibt, as in some of the other Provinces, Let the teachers take hold of this matter and the government supply the means neces- sary to enable them to do so, and he felt certain that samples of work done in our common and high schools can next year, be displayed at our Provincial Exhibition which will reflect credit on the youth and teachers of our Province. Let each and all of theteachers strive todo their best to advance the moral physical and intellectual education of the youth under their charge, always bearing in mind that we are in great measure moulding the future lives and happiness, of God’s last and best crea- tion, (applause.) The above is a. mere summary of an excellent and forcible address,

Laying of the Corner Stone of the ew Salvation Army Barracks.

Yesterday afternoon the interesting cere- mony of laying the corner stone of the Salva- tion Barracks which is to be built on Great George Street, took place at half-past two o'clock, A procession was Samal which, headed by the officers and staff, marched through the streets, and at 3 o'clock reached the spot where the ceremony took place. Notwithstanding the many other attractions of the Exhibition there was a large gathering. The ceremonies were commenced by fevotionsl exercises, which were led by Major Jacobs, assisted by Staff Capt. Beatty and the Island officers, after which the Hon, David Laird, who had been asked to perform the ceremony, laid the corner stone, after which he gave a short address. He was in sympathy with the Salvation Army, and every organization whose object was the salvation and uplifting of the human race. As the Army had been instrumental in the past of doing much good he hoped that in the future their triumphs would be greeter. He belonged to another branch of the great army of God which was being led on by the Great Captain of our Sal- vation, and looked forward to the time when the Kingdom of the world-would become the Kingdom of our God and His Christ. It gave him much pleasure to be present and assist in this ceremony. Major Jacobs said that the building about to be erected would be an orna- ment to the city, and the street on which it was to be built. It will consist of a large hall capable of seating 600 persons, with a small hall behind for private meetings, &c., which would hold about 150, also an officers quarters. Staff Captain Beatty made a few remarks, saying that he had been looking forward to the event with a great deal of interest. Some three years ago the Army had bought this piece of land, and by the help of God and of christian friends had raised enough to pay for it, and felt very thankful that at last the foun- dation stone was laid, and that in a few months they would have a place of their own to be used for the glory of God. A collection was taken yp,after which the ceremonies were brought toa close by ginging ‘ Praise God from whom all blessings flow.”
