Old Man Coyote was hungry. The truth is. he had been hungry most of the winter. There were many days when he had nothing to,ent all day long. It always is that way with those who live in the land of ice and mow, and must depend on catching others for most of their food. Old Man Coyote had been living in the wilderness of the lower part of the Great Mountain. When food became scarce, and still more scarce, he wandered down into the Green Forest at the foot of the Great Mouniairi.

he came to the yard of Lightfoot the Deer. That yard didn't have a fence around it, Had you seen it. not knowing what such a place is called, you probably would not have thought of it as being a yard. It was simply a place where the snow was kept trodden downuso that Lightioot, Mrs. Lightfoot and the twins could move about among the trees on which they browsed for the only food they could get in winter. At fast as snow fell it was trodden down. All around it the snow was so deep, that they really were prisoners in their own yard, as such a place is called.
