Tennyact's New Poem.

The literary sensation of the week in Lon- don has been Tennyson's poem “ Vastness,” printed in Macmillan. It is appare ntly a satire on various contemporary, political and social movements, The following are the most striking verses :

A hearth upen our dark globe sighs after many a vanished face ;

Many a planet by many & sm may roll witb the dust of a vanished race,

Raving politics never at rest as this poor earth’s p®le history runs.

What is it all but a trouble of ants in the gleam ot a million million of suns?

Lies upon this side, lies upon that side, truth less violence mourn'd by the wise ;

Thousands of voices drowning his own in a popular torrent of lies upon lies.

Faith her zenith or all,but lost in the gloom of doubts that darken the schools;

Craft with a bunch of all heal ia her hand fol- low’d up by her vassal legton of fools

Stately purposes, valor - battle, glorious an- oals of army and fivet

Death for the right cause, death for the wrong cause, trumpets of victory, groans of deteat

Innocence seethed in her mother’s milk, and chirity setting the mariyr aflame.

Thraldom who walks with the banner o! freedom, and recks not to ruin a realm in her name,

What is it all if we all of us end but in being our own corpse Coffias at last?

Swallowed in vastness, lost in sileuce, drown- ed in the deeps of a meaningless past.

The fourth stanz. is supposed to refer to the Salvation Army, the sixth to the Pall Mall Gazette exposures. Tho whole is given as received over the cable, and miy contain some inaccuracies,

Vaccination.

At the present time, when vaccination numbers more disciples than it ever did in the past, Dr. Tyndall’s explana- tion of its “ philosophy ” will be inter-

esting to our readers. After pointing out that the mineral matter io the

ashes of burnt wheat or barely straw is absolutely essential to the growth of the crop, and that in a soil lacking the necessary constituents, neither tree nor | ceres! can live. Professor Tyndall thus continues; “ Now, contagia are living things, which demand certain elements of life just as imexorably as trees, or wheat or barely ; and it is not difficult to see that a crop of a given parasite may 80 far use up a constituent exist- ing ion small quantities in the body, but essential to the growth of the p: arasite, as to render the body unfit for the pro- duction of a second crop. The soil is exhausted; and, until the lost con- stituent restored, the body is pro- tected from any further attack from the same disorder. Such an explaoation of non-recurrent diseases naturally pre- sents itself to a thorough believer ia the germ theory; and such was the solution which, in reply to a question, I ventured to offer nearly fifteen years ago to an eminent physician. To exhaust a soil, however, a parasite less Vigorous and destructive than the really virulent one .may suflice ; and if, after having, by means of a feebler organism, exhausted the soil without fatal results, the most highly virulent parasite be introduced into the system, it will prove powerless. This, in the language of the germ theory, is the whole secret of vaccination.
