Social Workers Meet

The N. B. - P. E. 1. Branch of the cgnadian Association of Social Workers met Saturday, January lbth at the Admiral Beauty Hotel ui saint John. During the busi- ness meeting reports were heard (mm various committees. Miss Kathleen C. Morrissy, Branch Rep- ruontative. Fredericton, informed the membersl”, that the National office is awaiting the Report on Special Committee on Program Evaluation and Planning before suggesting any general change in National Policy. This National Committee chaired by Miss Flor- ence Christie of Montreal (former- ly of saint John, N. B.) is at- tempting to reassess the aims and functions of the Associa ion.

Miss Morrissy announced that Miss Joy Maines of Ottawa, Na- llollhl Executlvrsecretary will be in the Maritimes in June when she will meet with the members of the Association attending the Maritime Conference on social Work being held from June 20-24 at Halifax.

According to Mrs. Miller 'hi- National Assistance Act and National Health Act form the legislative structure of Britain's social Services. Although this is a contributory system every person ill need in Britain is eligible to sizbsistance Maintenance which is made available to the recipient in cash. Non-contributory pensions are also paid to persbns who had no opportunity to contribute prior io the National Assistance Act of ill-18.

Mrs. Miller praised the health scheme and the work of private Soczril Agencies in meeting finan- .-inl need. In the field of Social work Education she felt that schools in Britain were attempt- mg to find additional field place- ments for students as this has been one of their biggest problems

The March Meeting of the As- sociation is to be held in Moncton when the special speaker will be Dr. Bernard Hennefor. Director of Penal Institutions for the Prov- ince of New Brunswick.

Dutch Family Welcomed To New Argyle

On the evening of January 1th the people of New Argyle gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John VfaoEaohern to welcome Mr. and Mrs John Havenga as new res- drama to the district. Mr. Arnold Mai-.Eachern acted as chairman. Mr Ralph Macxinnori and Miss Stella Mscnachern escorted Mr and Mrs. Havengs to the chairs of honor: Min Merldeth Maobean was celled on to read an address. and Miss Florence Maonougall presented Mr. and Mrs. Havenga with a well filled purse.

Mr. Havenga thanked all for their kindness. and felt that they would feel at home in New Argyle. They are jolly good fellows. was sung. The rest or the evening was spent inmueic, singing. and games. several Dutch selections were sung by Messrs. John and Henry Ha- veuge. The organlsts for the even- lng were Mrs Hugh Macxenzle. Dies At 77

The funeral of the late Mrs. Henry Warwick-Kelvey of Fortune Bridge, Prince Edward Island was held on Friday. January Zlst.. 1955 from the MacLean Funeral Home. The late Mrs. Warwick-Kelvey was born Elsa Duncan in Stockholm, Sweden. on October 24th.. 1877 and passed away at Beach Grove Inn on January 19th. The funeral ser- vice at the MacLean Funeral Home was conducted by Rev. Canon J. . Ibbott and at the Church of England Cemetery in Souris by Canon lbbott and Rev. D. A. Sharpe. Mrs. Warwick Kelvey. whose husband .predeceased her several years ago. had no rela- tives in this country. Captain Ne- ville Heber-Percy was an honour- ary pallbearer while the active pallbearers were Messrs. R. . Macbean. Edwin Reid, Harry Burke. J. R. Underhay, L. E. John- ston, and M. W. Weeks.

Relatives and friends of Mrs. Jas. D. Flood, will be pleased to learn that she is gradually pro- gressing from sudden illness re- quiring immediate medical atten- on. . Deep sympathy goes out to the nearest-of-kin of the late Mr. Sei- wyn Clark, a progressive farmer. and for many years a widely known and highly respected resi- dent of Augustine Cove, whose re- cent deaili has brought grief in those residing on the homestead, to others near residing. and a great loss to the community at large. A large concourse of relatives. neighbors and friends were pres- ent in pay final tributes of respect. at the funeral services for the late Major Carruthers. widely known and highly respected resi- dent of Augustine Cove. on Jan- uary 22. The late Mr. Carruthers. has been a very progressive farm- er of that community for many years. had a wide circle of rela- tives and friends. to whom his death is keenly felt. and his pass- ing a great loss to the community at large.

Mr. John H. Myers was a visitor among relatives and friends at Moncton during the past week. Mr. Myers relates the drastic loss of a farmer who is the owner of a not far distant island to which he transports his large herd of cattle, by scows. to pasture there during the summer months. and returns

hem to the mainland by driving them across the ice, when the ice is sufficiently strong to carry the large herd. Tollowing the frost, previous to that of January 21. the cattle started across the precarious- ly frozen waters of their own ac- cord, resulting in the drowning of 30 of their number. before the rest of the herd could be rounded up and returned to the island.

Favorable weather and roads greeted worshippers attending the services of public worship here on January 23. The message taken from the words: "What is man that Thou art mindful of hlmf”. received an attentive hearing. the congregation also blending their voices with the choir in the hymns of the services.
