Picrmus To ANNeE.—Statistics furnished by the religious authorities show that a larger number of pilgrims visited the shrine of Ste. Anne de Beaupre in 188% than in any previous year. The total num- ber was 100,951, being 9,604 more than in 1888. There were 111 pilgrimages, 97,700 pilgrims partook of communion, and 3,047 Among the pil- bishops.

Fatar Accipent.—The Woodstock Press Williard Bull, while felling a tree in the woods, last Monday, cut a top off a cedar which was in lis way. When the tree fell it come towards him, and stepping back to clear it, was forced on to the stump of the cedar, which punctured his body. He was extricated from this pain- ful position, and surgical aid summoned. He lingered, though suffering severely, un- til Sunday, when the injury proved fatal.

Some Statistics. —The Pictou News says: The forthcoming Town Report will contain some interesting figures. The amount raised by assessment in 1889 was $15,755 in ’S89 as against $13,240.71 in '88. The new law in re- ference to dog tax has made quite an addition to the revenue, the amount for ‘89 being $160.50 instead of $43 in 88. Outof the Il4 cases before the police court during the year, 64 were directly charged with drunkenness, 21 of the remainder were simple cases of neglect, such as failure to register dogs and allowing cows to run at large.

Ray has got outa very good little invention in the shape of a pot cover with an attachment to the stovepipe to carrv off all steam and noxious smeli while anything is in the process of cooking, thus saving the house from being filled with those disagreeable smetls which arise from meats and vegetables while cooking. This cover can be had to fit any size of a pot desired, and can be used on any part of the stove. This attachment can also be made to the wash-boiler, and works equally as well.

Some Wuotesome Apvice.—A Canadian gentleman, who has beep an extensive travel- ler, has been giving his experience in letters to the Toronto Mai. As South America is occupy ing a large share of attention at present it is interesting to see our own Canada com pared with it. He begins by contrasting the South American cities generally with those of Canada, greatly to the advantage of the latter. The. Canadian girls, he says, are on an average ‘‘ far prettier, more ladylike, and healthy” than any he saw anywhere else, and his advice to all young men is to stick to Canada and they will have a much happier and longer life than they could at any place to be found in South America,

Srr,—Your informant, when he states that ‘**the Canadian Express Company is the only one that can establish agencies in the Maritime Provinces ”’ is either ignorant or untruthful, or, perhaps, both. The St. John Sux of the 15th inst. says :—

‘**The Dominion Express Company have made arrangements for the extension of their express business to Halifax and intermediate stations on trains of the C. P. R.”

‘*The Dominion Express Compauy will open an office in Moncton to-day. This Com- pany have a through tine from Haltfax to Vancouver. — Times, 16th.

‘*The Dominion Express Company have established an office in this city.”—Halifax Herald, 17th.

**The Dominion Express Company had a large quantity of goods bound for Halifax yes- terday. It was their first trip through. The messenger runs from Montreal, and goes on to Halifax.” —St. John Sun, 16th.

If any aggrieved or designing person has any bile to get relieved of or any private malice to gratify he had better in future appear over his own signature and state his locality, Cherry Valley does not need an outside mouthpiece, either politically or otherwise. If this meddlesome fellow continues in the future to stain the fair fame of Cherry Valley by his seribblings against Hon. D Ferguson, we shall feel compelled to public- ly expose his treachery and duplicity.
