Tux Minister of Railways was at River du Loup on Monday, and prebably reached Moncten yesterdey, He is accompanied by Mr. Schrieber, Mr. Pottinger, and other officials of the Railway, and 1s spending some time at various points ascertaining the con- dition of the road and the wants of the people.

A Sap Srory.—Messre. Duncan and Theos. MeLean, brothers, of Rogers Hill, Picteu county, left for Colorade in March, last year. The younger, Themas, died in August last of mountain fever; and a despatch received from a relation in Denver, last Saturday, announc- ed the death of the elder brother. The body of the latter is being broaght home for inter- ment.—Annapelis Journal.

A scHeoNER, name unknown, from Grand Ance to P. E. Island, loaded with grind- stones, while trying to enter McLean’s Golly, Escuiminac, struck and went to pieces. Not a vestige of her is now to be seen. The crew were saved with what they stood in. Part of the cargo has been fished up, and is now sold among the inhabitants to raise money te take the crew home. — Ex.

The rate in Nahant is $4.50 and in Milton $5 Ten cities and 122 towns report an increase in rates ; 2 cities and 35 tewns report the same rates as last year.

Arrempt To Smormer A CAPTAiIn.—A cor- respondent of the 7'imes at Parrsboro writes:— ** An attempt was made to smother Capt. Cleveland of the schooner ‘‘Second,” on the night of the 4th inst. by the owners of the said schooner, it is supposed. Capt. Ryklofh, E. Dingle and Jesiah Puysley were arrested and loeked up to await trial. Suspicion rests strongly on Capt Ryklofh, although it is to be hoped it may only prove suspicion.”

Last week a woman died in the western suburbs of Halifax and was buried, and rumors in circulation caused a partial investi- gation into the matter, and it was feund that the woman came down to breakfast one morn- ing very ill, and could hardly meve at all. Her husband went for a docter, who arrived te find the woman sitting by the stove dead. Those who laid the corpse out said she was covered with bruises, the result of a beating she had received the day previous to her death. Tho children, five in number, were in a very neglected state, two with badly burned feet. The case has such an aspect that it was deemed expedient to place the matter be- fore the coroner, and the 8S. P. @. A. have taken the initiative, so as te have the rumors thoroughly sifted.

Information has been received of a fight between hostile Apaches and United States cavalry in Apache County, in which four bucks were killed and three women and children captured. The Apaches were scattered by the engagement, and are mak- ing towards San Carlos Agency.

Dr. Ambrose Goetz, two years ago a wealthy and prominent physician of St. Petersburg, and once physician to the Rus- sian embassy to Japan, was found dead at his boarding house here yesterday, having taken poison. He was forced to flee from liberal politieal tendencies, and his pro- perty was coniiscated. He was not able to support himself by his practica here, and poverty dreve him to suicide.

San Francisco, Nov. 7.

The steam whaler Belvidere has arrived ; also the whalers Northern Light, Dawn and Rainbow, bringing uews of the Arctie relief steamer Redgers. Lieut. Berry found Wrange! Land to be an island. He sent a party from the Rodgers in small boats te explore the land. They returned, having gone completely around it. The Rodgers then steamed 120 miles north and northwest in search of further land, but failed to find any. Lient. Berry ascended the mountain on Wrangel Island and from the top saw the sea all roundit. The season has been most favorable for ex- ploration. Captain Owen, of the Belvi- dere, said he weuld not be surprised to hear of the Jeannette coming home by the way of Greenland. The Rodgers intends to send out a sledge party from winter quarters to explore the coast of Siberia. She expecta to leave her winter quarters next June and go as far north as possible.

Dr. Wallac, F. BR. 5. E., F. C. S., Gas Examiner to the City of Glasgow, in a lecture delivered by him, calculated that £130,000 ($650,000) a year, are thrown away in Glas- gow by the use of imperfect fittings. On the subject of Gas Burners he srys: “+Another and as I think a better Burner is that called Bray’s regulator, and as I consider these the best unien Burners attainable at moderate cost, I have selected them for a series of ex- periments.”

The Report of the Committee of the British Association of Science to enquire as to the best means for the development of light frora Coal Gas of different qualities—comprising Dr. William Wallace, Professor Dittmar, and Mr. Thomas Wills, F. C.8., F. I, C. E., showed that Bray’s Burner's yielded the greatest amount of light of all the two or three score of Burners reported upon, which includedall the Burners of repute in the market.

In a pampblet upon Light and Heat, pub- lished by B, B. Taber, A, M., he says: “ The cost of Gas as compared with other illumin- ants is much more economical when rightly used, than many suppose. From experiments made for this purpose, the following results have been obtained. They were made by burning samples ot Devyoe’s Brilliant Oil and ordinary Oils, and testing their illuminating power. It was found that Coal Gas costing one cent at $3 per thousand feet, gave a light equal to 18 candles, while Devoe’s Brilliant Oil consuming 27.4 grammes cost- ing halfa cent, gave a light equal to 9 candles,

“A good Argand or Johnson's Burner, the Burner's used in the last experiment, will therefore give the light of 2 ordinary Oil Burners in direct comparison, at no greater expense in the cas» of the finer and safer grades of Oil, Lights,however, on the author- ity of Scientists, are not to be compared in direct proportion, but in proportion to the squares of their powers, and such a com- parison with the case of the use of Gas, its cleanliness, freedom from odor and dangers, renders its use desirable wherever it can be introduced.”

As the above experiments were made with Gas at $3 per 1000 feet, and not consumed through Bray’s Burners, it will readily be seen how much more economical it is to con- sume Gas instead of Oil, when its price is oniy $2.63 per 1000 feet as now charged here when consumed, more especially through Bray’s Burners.

Messrs. Geodwin & Co., of Philadelphia, the well-known manufacturers of Scientific in- struments for testing the ‘illuminating power of Coal Gas, ete., say in their Circular to Gag Companies : “ In presenting the Bray’s Stand- aid Patent Slit Union Purners and Lanterns, for which we are the sole Agents in the United States, to the attention of the public, we are convinced that we are filling a want long felt.” They further add; “ The yield of light from these Burners is 12 to 20 per cent. greater per cubic foot of Gas consumed than that from any flat flame Burner hitherto in- troduced, (no 4 eod tf
