Of Mary, the daughter thus orphaned, her misfortunes and her tragic end at the order of Elizabeth of England are well knewn, Even those who persist in accus- ing her of eomplicity in the murder of her husband may find santification for the act in the fact that royal homicides were the rule, aud that king murder had become a virtue in Scotland, But Mary’s defenders will not fall back upon this questionable plea.

James VI. (James I. of England), son of Mary, thongh he died in peace in mature life, was yet the victim of various plots aimed against his life or liberty, notably the Gowrie plot in his own country, and the Guy Fawkes gunpowder plot in Eng- land.

The head of Charles I. fell under the ax of the commonwealth. His immediate heir, Charies II. after the restoration, was too careless and volatile a prince to incur enmity, and was wont to say to his brother James, who was next in the order of succession, that they ‘‘are not going to kill me ito make you king.” Upon the death of Charles, James became king, and he was dethroned and driven iuto exile by his son in law, William of Orange. James’ descendants for one or two generations made efforts to recover the crown, but the last of the house took orders in the Roman Catholic chureh, leaving no heirs, thus closing the chapter of ‘lhe Fatal Line, ” although collaterally the heirs of the Stuart line still reign in England, through Elizabeth, a granddaughter ot James L, who was allied in marfiage with the honse of Hanover, on whom the succession was settled by act of parliament. It is further worthy of remark that the usurping daugh- ters ot James, Mary and Anne, both died childless,

Of those incidentally connected with the Scottish monarchy, the fatality ia no less striking. Heury ‘Stuart (Lord Daruly), the husband of Mary, and king by the courtesy, was murdered 'by the explosion of & gunpowder mine, contrived by James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell. This appeared like admirable strategy, but is resulted in the serpent’s undoing. The rigid line of tail, straightened out from the tree to the bear's body, gave the infuriated beast a chance to seize hold of its assailant. He promptly accepted the chance, and with a tremendous effort turned and fastened his powerful jaws in the enake’s quivering flesh. The hissing was then appaliing, as the writhing ser- pent rapidly unfolded its huge body, and struck savagely at the clenched jaws of its enemy to make it loosen its hold on the mangled mass of flesh. In response the bear, with s muffled ror, kept worrying the mouthful of snake in its jaws in par- oxysms of anguished rage. Once more the serpent constricted its folds, the bear howled and gasped, and both rolled, still struggling, out of view into the high grass of the forest. Their track was marked with pools of blood, and when next they had Pp irted, The snake, evidenl badly burt, was defense, with his head erect, It had plainly hac enongh. and was more anxious to be let alone than to renew the conflict. Not so the TiLough nearly crnshed to death, with its tongue lolling out from its blood-flecked fosming jaws, the aroused brute wos full of fight. After a moment's pause it rush- ed upon the serpent. The latter was weak trom the loss of blood, and the bear got it by the head and dragged it about with roars of triumph. The undergrowth around was beaten down flat by the con vulsive strokes of the great serpent’s tail as the bear crushed its head to pieces, and at last it lay an inert and lifeless mass be- neath the assaults of the vindictive bear.

Bismarck's Best Smoke.

“The value of a good cigar,” said Prinee Bismarck in conversation with some friends, ‘‘is best understood when it is the last you possess and there is no chance of getting another, At Koniggratz I had only one cigar left in my pocket, which I carefully guarded during the whole of the battle as a miser guards his treasure. I did not feel justified in using it. I painted in glowing colors the happy hour when I should enjoy it after the victory. But I had miscalculated my chances. A poor dragoon lay helpless, with both arme crushed, murmuring for something to re fresh him. I felt in my pockets and found that I had only gold, which would be of no useto him. But stay, I had still my cherished cigar. I Mghted it for him and placed it between his teeth, You should have seen the poor fellow's grateful smile. I never enjoyed a cigar so muchas that one which I did not smoke.”

Tobacco as an Insecticide.

The old-time remedy of tobacco is rapid- ly coming into favor again. For cheap ness it can hardly be equaled, as only the refuse stems of the poorest quality need he used, In fact, these are better than the stems of fine Havana because poor tobacco eontaine a greater quantity of nicotine, which is the active poison that kills the insects. The decoction is made by steep- ing a pound of stems in a gallon of hot water. After it has cooled the liquid is strained off and applied with an ordinary spraying appatatus. Spraying with tobsc co tea is recommended for the flea beetles on tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage and radish- es, alaoas a specific for lice, ticks and other external parasites of animals. This remedy nas the recommendation that it is not adangerors poison to have around where children and innocent animals may get at it.—American Agricultuiist.

Hiving the Bees.

The hiving process is easily understood. Prepare your sections and place them in the hives when the peach beyins to bloom, so as to induce the bees to go to work in the sections at once, to de- posit the surplus honey. Honey is cheap, pure, sweet and healthful. It can be had for the taking of it, and is far superior in quality to the molasses that adorns so many tables, and I see no reason why the farmer should not have a bountiful supply. If you have a surplus it will bring you a neat profit when °placed upon the market.— Western Rural.

Visibility of Colored Lights,

A local scientist has recently made some very interesting tests with lights at sea, and declares that a white light can be seen further than any other. A red light comes next in carrying power, and green ranks third. From 60 to 80 per cent. of light is absorbed by red and 95 per cent. by green glass. The per centage of at eorption, of course, incre ses in ratio with the density of the color in the glass, and the condition of the atmosphere has considerable infiu- ence on the range of visibility of the lights, —Philadelphia Reeord.
