Il y a deux ans, j’eus le malheur de subir un choc électrique. Cet accident eu de -terribles consé- quences. Outre des blessures graves, la secousse avait été si forte que je fus obligé de garder le lit pendant plusieurs mois, sous les soins d’un bon médecin. Je relevai cependant et quoique très fai- ble, au bout de quelques semaines, je recommençai à travailler, car il me fallait gagner la vie de ma famille. Maisle malheur semblait s'attacher À moi. Je ne mangeais plus, parce que je ne pou- vais plus digérer, et j'étais sans cesse assez étourdi pour tomber. Toutes ces souffrances me rencaient très nerveux et je passais une partie de mes nuits sans sommeil, ne sachant dans quelle position me mettre par d’atroces douleurs que j’endurais dans les reins.

Inutile de dire que je ne pouvais plus travailler et que j'étais bien découragé. Ayant entendu par- ler des Pilules Moro et en ayant lu moi-même les an- nonces dans les journaux, je voulus lesessayer. J'en

depuis cinq mois seulement et je ne suis plus le même homme. Mes douleurs de reins sont disparues, plus de maux de tête, ni d’étourdisse- ments, comme avant. Je mange bien et dors bien toutes mes nuits. Ce qui est mieux encore et incroy- able pour moi, je travaille. J'en ai pris huit boîtes, mais je veux continuer à en prendre quelques mois, car je sens qu'elles vont faire de moi un homme fort comime j'étais avant ces deux terribles maladies. Quoique la santé du vénérable archevêque ait laissé à dé- sirer depuis assez longtemps, la nouvelle de sa mort à sur- pris douloureusement non seulement les fidèles et le clergé du diocèse d'Ottawa qui avaient appris à apprécier son dé. vouement et sa charité mais encore ses nombreux amis que sa notariété lui avait attirés en dehors de son diocèse.

La vie de Mgr. Duhamel a été toute d'humilité et d’a- postolat incessant. La mort, au milieu de sa visite pasto- ral, est le couronnement d’une carrière ou le travail a tou- jours tenu la première place. Il a vu grandir pratiquement le diocèse qu’il a en sous sa dirction pendant si longtemps en même temps que des années se multipliant sur sa tête, et l’on peut dire que ce développement est dû en grande partie à sou zèle infatiquable.

La mort de Mgr. Duhamel est une perte, non seulement pour son diocèse, mais pour toute la nationalité canadienne française qui comptait dans lui un de ces plus ardents dé- fenseurs. Avec toute la presse nous tenons à déposer sur sa tombe nos respectueux et sincères hommages.

Les restes du prélat défunt ont été transportés dans la ca- pitale hier après-midi, et un no'2breux cortège de ñdéles ac- compagua le corps, de la gare à la basilique, eu il reposera en chapelle ardente jusqu'a demain jeudi, jour des funé- ruilles.

L’oraison funèbre sera prononcée en français par Mgr. Bruchesi, archevêque de Montréal et en anglais par Mon- seigneur McEvoy, archevêque de Toronto.

Monseigneur Duhamel était le fils de Fiançois Duhamel et de Marie Joseph Audet Lapointe, et naquit à (Contre- coeur, province de Québec, ie 6 novembre 1841. Ses pa- rents vinrent demeurer à Ottawa peu de temps après sa naissance, et le futur prélat reçut son instruction au collège Saint-Joseph de cette ville. Il fit ses études théologiques à la même institution et fut ordonné prêtre en 1863. Il fut successivem.nt vicaire à Buckingham et curé à Saint-Eugè- ne, comté de Prescott, et il accompagna feu Mouseigneur Guigues à Rome, lors du concile œcuménique. Pius tard, eu 1873, il accompagna son évêque, en qualité de théolo- gien à la réunion des évêques à Québec. A la mort de Monseigneur Guigues, il fut nommé pour lui succéder com- me second évêque d'Ottawa, et fut consacré le 28 octobre 1874. Ilfut élevé à la dignité d’archevêque en mai 1886, et l’année suivante nommé métropelitain de la province ec- clésiastiquo d'Ottawa.

Monseigneur Duhamel a toujours porté le plus grand in- térêt à la cause de l'instruction, et en 1889 il obtint pour le collège d'Ottawa les pouvoirs d'une université catholique, C'est par ses soins qu’eut lieu, en 1882, l'élection du vica- riat apostolique de Pontiac. Sa cathédrale ayant été élevée à la dignité de basilique mineure, il établit un chapitre et les Conférences Ecclésiastiques afin d'assurer une meilleure administration des affaires du diocèse. A ses autres hon- neurs ont été ajoutés le degré de docteur en théologie, et les titres d'assistant au trône pontifical, de grand croix de
