Sir,-I sent a page of The Guar- dian to the "Calvary Evangel" office, N.Y.. containing your re- print of Rev. S. M. Shoemaker": talk. "The Soul of Democracy.” By return mail I got expreslons of thanks and wishing that their magazine could be used still more in this way. Allow me to quote as follows from Rev. Mr. Shoe- maker:

"A real Christian uill in some sense be marked off from the rest. of his fellows. He ought to stand out blbove the spiritual and moral mediocrity of the egwd. It will cost him something. Are we willing to pay the cost? he that renounceth not all that he hath, he can not be my disciplc'. What. does He main by that? For them it meant literal poverty. It seems to come down in the end. as a. practical matter. to turning to that other great. command. to seek first. the Kingdom of God. and all lwscr things will take care of themselves. And then He gets to what is the real motive of this-Salt is good. but if the salt have lost. its savor. where- with shall it be salted? HOME IN THE COUNTRY Sir.-For a number now we have spent our summer months in the country. months that seemed to slip away so fast. This season we camccarly in Ap- ril to the humble house by the side of the road we call our little country home. In another week we shall gaze at the golden Fall sunset for the last time this sea- son and pull Llp stakes and go back to the city for the winter months, where we earn our daily bread, with the sincere wish that we may come "again when the warmer breezes blow.

There is both joy and sadness in coming and going to the coun- try each year. There is the big joy of coming for another season. We look lihcad to many happy days and cool evenings, to watch- ing the children at. play at home and on the shore. Watching the waves lick the shore line and fall back again into the open sea, the thought. comes to us: How many of our good friends of leaf. year have answered the toll of the bell and are not with us any more?

There are so miiny in the city who never know country life: the fresh mornings. when the sunrise lick: the dew fmm the lawns and flowers, the lorious lmell of the clover. and t moonlit slimmer and fall night; when you sleep undlntuilbed until singing birds wake you for the day. And there are to many in the country who cl-ave life in the big city-which they think of no a place where people have nothing to do but dance. sleep and eat. when the groccrlu are paid for by the mllluncn and lnndloi-h never collect their yent. Our first stop was at Luden University. the oldest seat of learning in the country. We then came down through the Hague. the capital city, with its parliament buildings. and where the home of the Intematlonal Court of Justice in located. It in I. beautiful city, but everything and everyone has the appearance of being very of- ficial. The buildings are old, beautiful and solid looking.

After several stops lit local points, we arrived in that great old port and seat of the commer- cial life of the country. Rotter- dam. Here is the headquarters of the con.sumcra' cooperative move- ment. which is growing like a mushroom and is now 0. very im- portant. factor in the economic life of the towns and cities. Although we heard of the aerial attack on Rotterdam in the early dnys of the war. it is hard to re- alize that so much damage could be wrought. The whole center of the city was destroyed; nearly four thousand people were killed in one day. It was a sudden and brutal attack meant to break any resistance to the Nazi army which was to march in the next day. It worked when I threat of similni damage to The Hague, Amsterdani and the other cities came. There was nothing that the Dutch- Gov- ernment could do but. sui-render. Then the country wltli all its re- sources was taken over in a few days, increasing tile power of Hit- lerla war machine.

But those days are over and Rotterdam is being rebuilt. They cannot build high buildings In the Netherlands because there is no rock for a. solid foundation. but there are some new and beautiful buildings already completed. Ar- chitecture of which the Dutch are about the heat planners and judges in the world. is not. being forgot-
