Cases have not unfrequently occurred in which it has been proposed by Fereign Governments to grant Decorations to British Subjects residing in Her Majesty 's Colonies.

It appears to be not generally known, that British Sub- jects are not entitled to wear such Decorations without Her Majesty’s special permission, and that such permission is granted only in cases in which the Foreign Order shall have been conferred in consequence of active and distinguished service which had been performed before the enemy, either at Sea or in the Field; or in cases in which the Recipientshall have been actually and entirely employed beyond Her Majesty’s Dominions, in the service of the Foreign Sovereign by whom the Order is conferred.

You will find in the Appendix to the recent Edition of the Colonial Regulations, page 128, the Regulations respecting the grant of Foreign Orders and Medals to British Subjects, which have been promulgated by command of‘ Her Majesty, and which are new in force. It would be desirable that general publicity should be given to these Regulations in the Colony under your Government.

Assessment on Land and Real Estate in Georgetown and Common.

IN pursuance of an Act of the General Assembly of‘ this Island, passed in the twenty-seventh year of the reign of Her present Majesty Queen Victoria, intituled “ An Act to consolidate and amend the several laws imposing an Assessment on all Lands in this Colony, and for the encouragement of Education:” 1 do hereby publicly notify the owners or occupiers of Land and Real Estate in Georgetown and Common, for which the annual assessment levied thereon by the Assessors for said Town and Common is payable, that unless the assessment for the current year be paid into the hands of Mr. Archibald McKinnon, my Collector for said Town and Common, within the time prescribed by Law, pro- ceedings will be taken against all such Lands and Real Estate as shall then be in arrears for the non-payment of the sums charged thereon, agreeably to the directions of the above recited Act. amounts due on the Purchase of Public Lands, and for the sale of Wilderness Land :—

On Thursday, the 31st day of October next, at 9, a. in. ; and on Friday and Saturday, the lat and 2nd days of November, at Mr. John Preston’s, Tignish, Let I, for the Tenants on Lots 1 and 2.

On Tuesday, the 5th day of November, at 9, a. m.; and on Wednes« day, the 6th day of November, at Mr. David Hunter’s, Alberton, Lot 4, for the Tenants on Lots 4 and 5.

NOTICE—Those Tenants who have not accepted the provisions of the Land Purchase Act, and have omitted to pay their rent, are hereby finally notified, that unless payment is made to the Commis- sioner at the time and place above named, distraiuts will be issued
