Since these children were placed under observation. the Polio Vac- cine Evaluation Centre. under Dr. Thomas Francis. Jr.. lass kept a careful eye on their medical his- tories.

when some of them did contract polio, specimens were analyzed. medical reports were written and their pro ess was studied. GUARD FORMATION

At no time in the history of the test was it known publicly which child was given the vaccine and which was not. That information has guarded in the card file at the centre. 0

Here. in an elaborate code of punches and notations. were the answers to the value of the salk vaccine. Now they are ready to be fed into giant tabulators to get a human answer in mathematical terms.

Dr. Francis. chairman of epide- miology (the study of the behavior oi diseases) at the University of Michigan. has the reputation among his fellow workers for pain- staking careful research.

As in the development of the vac- cine. the money for the evaluation has come from the National Found- ation for infantile Paralysis but it has been given directly to the Uni- versity of Michigan. so that the evaluation and the report will be ' dependent and fair.
