W in Softball

Two games were played in the saw aomiul League last evening. The sunshine Dairy. defened the ;Bowery Bombers by the score of 16-! while the Legion defeated the Canada. Packers 12-11 and the Guardian Angels were awarded two points when the B.Y.C. failed to field I team.

In the Dairy-Bombers game Ced Ballem was the winning pitcher for me Dairy while Hughes receiv- ed credit for the defeat. He was relieved by Mccallum in the 3rd inning. The extra base hits were picked up by Jackson and Crockett of the Dairy and Bradley of the Bombers each with triples. Chev- eirie. Crockett and Jackson of Dairy all had three hits in five trips to the plate.

In the Legion-Canada Packers game Nicholson on the mound for the Legion picked up the win WIIIIP

Jim Gauthier was the losing pitch- 8. Nicholson of the Legion also had 2 hits.

The longest. hit of the game was a triple by Thistle in the 7th ii.- ning The fielding gains were pulled off by the Legion outfield as they robbed the Packers of at least two' extra base hits. l

steady Art Mackenzie of Char- lottetown, playing the most bril- liant golf of his career. yesterday won the N.B -P.E.I. Amateur and Open Golf Championships by defeating runner-up Bob Gray by a. single stroke after 73 holes of gruelling tournament play.

The 30-year-old Macxenzie. who was once a caddie at the Belve- dere Golf Course. sank a 20-foot putt on the 73 rd. hole for a birdie three to win the coveted cham- pionship. Gray had a par four on the hole.

The two Charlottetovm club members finished the regulation 72 holes of tournament play with identical scores of 298. MacKenzie fired 9. par 72 on his last round yvhile Gray had a one-over 73.

They drove off on the 73rd hole with darkness approacliliig. Both were on the green in two strokes and both about 20 feet from the pin. Macxenzie sank his putt neatly while Gray missed the edge of the cup by a fraction of an inch.

MacKenzie's putt climaxed a thrilling round of golf for the championship. Gray. MHCKCllZl6

and Tommy Stewart of St..Croix. New Brunswick. stai'tt:ci the final round with only one stroke separ- ating them after 54 holes of play.

Gray and Stewart led with scores of 225. Stewart went out of the running with a nine on Number Seven while MaCKCllZlO picked up one stroke on the first nine to square matters with Gray.

The two club-mates played bril- liant golf on the last nine. MRO- Keiizie, who was rated an outside chance of iviiinlng the crown be- fore 'thc tournament started, came up -with it sure. steady game while Gray made a remarkable come- back after encountering trouble with his drives and putts.

Archie Skinner of Saint An- drews. New Brunswick, won titt- professional tournament with a score of 300. He med two rounds of 72 and 74 yesterday to nose out Gene McNabb of St. Croix and Cecil Dowling of Chzirlottctoivn.

Dowling fired rounds of 74 and 73 to finish two strokes behind Skinner. The Charlottetown Club pro encountered trouble on the fourteenth hole when he struck a stump with his drive. He took an eight for the hole.

McNabb. who had led the profes- sionals on the first two days of the tournament. fired rounds of 76 and 77 yesterady.

. you--old golfer from Moncton won the two-province Junior title witr a. '72-hole score of 311. Lewis end- ed the meet in strong fashion carding a 74 on his last 18.

John Sears of Fredericton was runner-up with a total score of 328 while Errol Nicholson of Char- lottetown was third with 830 and Harry Simmons of Charlottetown fourth with 334.

Lewis shot. steady golf through. out the tournament. He iii-ad an 83 on the opening day and ther. came back with successive rounds of 77-77-74.

Pete Kelly of Fredericton. lart year's amateur and open champion finished third yesterday with ; total score of 305. The Physics Training instructor from the Uni- varsity of New Brunswick ha: rounds of '78 and 76.

Tommy Stewart of St. Croix, Wh: led the field after his brilliant 6'. on Tuesday, finished fourth. Stew- art took an 81 on his last round and wound up with a. total score of 305

Roy Morrison of Moncton anti Bill Beer of Charlottetown tied for fifth position. one stroke back of Stewart. Beer had a hot morning round of 74. He shot an 80 in the afternoon, Morrison had 75 and 77.

Possibly the most outstanding hole of the Gray-Mackenzie-Stern art final was t.he sixteenth. it was mi this hole that Gray made his famous "stump-Shot" and recov- ered to score a birdie four.

Grays drive landed in the rough directly under a stump. He elected to play the ball and somehow shot it back onto the fairway. He land- ed on the green with his next shot and sank a 25-foot putt for thr birdie.

Maclienzie also came I'.hI'OIIgrl with El. brilliant putt on this hole for it birdie. He needed the birdie in order to stay in the running with Gray and sank a 12-footer.
