A Victeria despatch says on Thursday night a slide, six miles beiow Cache Creek, completely dammed up Thompsun River to the height of a hundred and twenty feet, which the river must surmount before re- suming its course. Should the dam break the damave to the railway work and wagon road through the narrow canyon and gorge will be enormous.

The heaviest wind storm ever experienced ere has prevailed since Saturday morning. No more disasters are reported here, and as all telegraph lines are down nothing can be heard on this shore. Great anxiety is felt forthe safety of the steamers Alpena and Depeva. The Alpena which left here for Chicago Friday was last seen at 1 a. m., Saturday half way over. No tidings been received singe.
San Francisco, Oct. 18.
Two serious copflagarations broke out in this city yesterday. Fire tirst occurred at the corner of Mission and Stewak streets and spread with great rapidiiy, sweeping away all the hay barns, lodging houses and lumber yards down to the edge of the water, causing heavy loss. Second fire broke out at the foot of Folsom street, aud destroyed all buildings of Oregon Steamsliip Company. Also Dutton’s large hay barns adjoining lumber yard, and two schoon:rs loaded with hay lying at wharf.

But the doctor, who at- tended upon the New Yorkers, says the case is one of lead poisoning from sclder that had been dissolved in the vinegar.

THE marriage ceremony at St. Paul’s church, yesterday evening, was deprived of solemnity by the disgraceful actions of a large portion of the congregation assembled. So loud was the hum sent up from different gos- siping crowds, that it was impossible to hear the service, although it was read in unusually high tones. Mingled with frequent tittering and laughing, this disgraceful order continued throughout the service, much, we imagine, to the annoyance of the parents and many friends of the young people.
