The startling account of war in this place which appeared in your last issue came upon the quiet unobirusive and peaceful inhabitants of Rose Valiey like a thurderb»lt out of the blue. There was no war here such as described. Itis pure fiction and if the writer has a penchant for that style of composition, which he apparently must have, it would be well for him vot to eail under false colours, and accordingly inform the public when he writes fiction that it:is fiction. A cry of righteous indignation went up from everybody when the _ so-calied “journal” was seen. One would suppose : that Rose Valley and

Some funny stores are told of the ignorance of the Boers in South Africa. M. A. P., vouches for the following one : Some years ago, Bishop Knight Bruce, of Bioemfontein, aftewards the First Bisbop of Mashonaland, was visiting the more scattered parts of hisdiocese. He arrived ata Datch farm, where he was to hold a confirmation, in time for the mid-day dioner. The good lady of the house came out to meet him, decked in a bail dress, and called him “my lord” at every posssi- ble opportunity. At last she even Furpaes- ed herself, and addressed him as “My lord God.” This was too much for the poor bishop, who hastily exclaimed. “My dear, good woman, please call me plain Mr. Bruce.” “Certainly, plain Mr. Bruce!’ was the immediate reply.

_On another occasion the bishop was be nighted, and obliged to seek shelter ata Boer Farm. He was hospitably invited in, and was shown intoa bedroom contain ing a large ted, in which he was quickly asieep. Soon, however, bis slumbers were disturbed by the farmer and his wife and family, who, one ty one lay down beside him, and all arocnd him. When daylight came, the farmer arose and left his wife and family peacefully sleeping by the bishop’s side!

He is 39 years old, and looks 60. He will never, Dr Pozzi says, be theroughly alive again. If he recovers his liberty, he will live, but only if surrounded with every care, wrap~ ped up, as it were, in cotton and nlaced in a greenhouse, like a plant which has suf» fered too much for it to ever recover its pristine vigor.
