In biclogy, in the evidence ef the prebittoric ages of man, ip the biatery of cli- mate changes, in geology, in the study of the physical geography of the earth, in astronomy and the wonderfu! story of the spectroscope, in optics, in the rapid development of elec- trie science, in the explana‘ionof the color- ing of the ether avd the clouds, and in the stery of the corr-lation of the various physi- eal forces, he follows the history of fifty years’ discovery with just enough minuteness to give it interest, aud enough generalization and rapidity to warn us of its wonderful rate of progress.

Now, we should like to know whe- ther Or Pradley is to contiaue the brilliancy or the eccentricity? On this the world is pro- fouudly ignorant. It has a general idea that Dr. ‘iradley is a Broad Charchman, as Dean Stauley used also to be called.. Dispatches from all parts of the country show the deepest sorrow and mourning at the President’s death. The bells were tolled, the buildings draped and the flags placed at half mast in this city. Crowds gathered around the newspaper offices where the bulletins were read in subdued silence, which was only broken at last by expressions of grief. Lonpon, Sept. 19.

Lowell, the American Minister, has re- ceived a telegram from the Queen, express- ing the grief of herself and family at the discouraging accounts regarding the Presi- dent, and requesting ali intelligence con- cerning his condition to be forwarded im- mediately tv Balmoral.

The Ship ‘‘ Olympus,” from San Francis- co to Seabeck, with a cargo of hay, oakum avd vil, was burned on the 14th inst., at sea. The crew and pessengers, twenty-six | in all, tock to the boats, and were! picked up the same day by the ship ‘‘ War | Hawk,” and taken to Port Discovery.

destroyed so far. At the Summit station | on the North Pacific Coast Railroad the | flames jumped a half mile, or else the fire was started by an incendiary, and another

large section is endangered ; 60,000 have | been burned, a large part ef which was val- uable timber land.
