They carry the heads with the upbearing grace of the full-blooded Indian; their skins are not red, but a clear, smooth copper color that shines like gold in the gnn; their hair is coarse and black as ebony, and they are decorated with bright feathers and gay ornaments. These women make the most wonderful pottery that comés to us from Mexico, for they have kept the old Aztec forms and decorations in their art, and they also weave wonderful baskets and do exqui- site em broide~.

Strongest Rope.

Given an equal number of strands tc make up the rope, and each of the same circumference, it may be readily shown that wire, twisted into rope form, will make a rope so strong as to admit of nc comparison even with the best white hemp rope. Twisted hempen cords wil! sustain 8,746 pounds, if the rope be ons- inch thick; but one-eighth of an inch in diameter of iron will sustain more thar one inch in circumference of hemp rope. No rope, whatever its material, could bear comparison with an inch rope made of piano steel wire, such a rope being able to bear not less than 268,000 pounds, ov nearly 120 tons, before it could be torn by a dead weight.—-Cincinnati En- yuirer.
