enthusiasts again yesterday. to cause the fourth rainout or partial postponmcnt. to afternoon race

meetings in the past week. But he used a rather unique way of doing it yesterday at Montague. Starting out under a blue and almost cloudlcss sky. the first heat had no more than been completed when a bank of dark clouds start- ed to creep up over the area. and by the time the horses were out on the track for the second race. a light shower commenced to fali.1 .

i 1 But things still looked hopci'ul.1 and most everyone was expecting it to clear again with nothing morei than a slight dampening. and the: races were continued under light. intermittent showers. that ncvt-r lessened the iniercsi. of the large crowd present. By the time the fourth heat was out. however. the clouds got darker and denser and the rain got heavier. to turn into a complete downpour by the time the horses came to the track for the fifth.

It proved too much for the fans. who were diving for cover from all points, and it was certainly too much for the horses and drivers. who were sent to the barns by the judges. when the track was turned into an unilt condition for safe racing by the downpour.

The odd part of the whole situat- ion. however, is the fact that out- side ihe immediate Montague arca. no rain fell. and fifteen or twenty minutes after the races were call- ed off. the sun was shining over the track again. without any hint of further rain. On the return trip back to Charlottetown. it was found that there had been no rain in areas within five or six miles of Montague. To tell anybody in this City who hadn't attended the meet. that it had b,ecn,rain.(3d 9'”- was to invite a look of disbelief that would question the speaker'sp sanity. And no wonder. Char- lotietown. just 30 miles or so away was bathed in sunshine all day.

City Midget and Bantam lose- bell leagues are expected to join the active ranks soon. Local of- ficials held a meeting at the Travel Bureau on Tuesday night to talk over plans and arrange for sched- ule etc. The various divisions of the two groups will hold their first workout sessions tonight under appointed supervisors to form teams ready for regular league play in the near future.

Abbies Defeat R.C.A.F. 5-2 For First Victory In Baseball League

Thrcr big runs in the fifth inn- ing which bipke up a one all game proved to be the deciding factor in the Abbies first win in Island League play as they down- ed the R.C.A.F. Royals by a 5-2 count in a grime played on Me- morial Field diamond last night before a large crowd of fans.

The win sent the Abbies in a two way tie with the Royals for third place in the standings. The teams renew their battle tonight in nnothor Island Lcuguc fixture in Summerside

Jack Murphy started on the mound for the losers hui was replaced by York in the sixth. The Royals drew first blood in the cvpcnini: frame when Francis sinszlcd to open the inning. Hulmc sacrificed him to second and St. John sent him to third on an in- field out. Barlow walked and "Gunner" Cox then drove a base hit into the field to score Fran- cis. The Abbies tied it up in the home half of the second when MacNcil wnlkcd. Flynn drove him In third with a single to right. Perry hit n ground ball to third with MncNr-ii being forced at the plate and Flynn going all the way to third. Joey LcClair then drove a long fly ball to left field with Flynn scoring after the catch.

In their big fifth the winners started with Lewis singling to right. Ht-nncssoy batted for Stan- ley and flied out to right. Murphy sinzied Lewis to second and Ryan llfillflcd out in the shortstop. But the Abbies first sticker. Eddie Lund drove a long double to right to score Lewis and Murphy went to third. MhcNciI then shot an- other ball into rlizht field which the ficldcr tried to catch off his shop strings. He missed the ball nnd it rolled behind him and hoih Murphy and Lund scored. WIMBLEDON. England. July 5- Budge Patty and never-say-die Frank Sedgman won the men's singles semi-finals in the all-Eng- land lawn tennis tournament to- day before a wildly clapping cen. Ire-court crowd of 15.000.

Both played brilliantly but Sedg- man's hectic five-set duel with Jaroslav Drobny stood head and shoulders above Patty's always certain triumph over fellow Am- crican Vic Seixas.

For the second straight da'ihc 22-year-old top-seeded Sedgman got up off the floor after he didn't seem to have even a prayer left. He lost the first two sets in short order to the self-exiled Czech. Midget. Bantam Baseball Leagues To Begin Soon

Local baseball officials uX7l10l1l'lC- ed last night that practices will be held this evening for all Bantam and Midget ball players in the City. in preparation for the start of the respective schedules of the two leagues which are expected to get underway shortly.

At a meeting held by officials Tuesday night the city was al- lotted into districts for the various groups to form their teams from. and laid plans for the operation of t.tie leagues and schedules Just as soon as all teams are formed. Ex- perienced coaches and supervisors have been appointed to organize the groups.
