Mr. Crosthwaile, chairman of’ the Committee on Teacher Shortage, slated that he had spent part o-f the morning with Mr. Longland. the English educationist who is at present touring Canada, givlnZ 18¢- turea on the New British Education Act. Mr. Langland stated that at one time the proportion of male and female teachers in the Old Country was approximately l to 3 and that today the situation is completely reversed, the propor- tion now being 3 men to 1 Woman- Tbe reason for this change has been largely due to the fact that prestige of the teacher in Great Britain has been greatly enhancﬁd during the last few years. Miss Kinney. Dlrcctress of Mont toba and chairman of the 1947 Edu- cation Week Committee, presented an interim report on the work done by her Committee.

Mi-sa Kinney reported that ..e attended s. meeting of the American Education Week Committee in Washington on January B and that the only point on which she thought wo could co-operatc with the American Education Week Committee this year la an histori- cal broadcast from some historical spot. That the Directors of the C.T.F protest to all Departments of Edu- cation and to the public, which is not fully Informed, the employ- ment of unqualified persons in any capacity'in classrooms under various guises as:

(a) persons ivlth short, courses in teacher training;

(b) person: with deficiencies in academic qualifications;

(c) persons with no professional training generally called “Permit Teachers";

(d) persons with no academic and no professional training called "permit teachers" or "correspond- ence supervisors."

And further that the real oxtent of the teacher shortage in each province be determined as accurate- ly so is practicable and that this information be given to the pub- llc.
