What would not be revealed were a cenius to be taken of the men in Chi- cago who have been awakened by the sound of a thief of the nignt cutting the screen away from the kitchen door, ard then sawing a hole in the woodwork ‘ce as toenable him to thrust his hand through, shoot the bolt and then break in to revel in a midnight debanuch of crime? How many men of this lakeside city have held joint debates with them- selves on the wisdom of getting up ard uttering a loud, protracted and rasonar.t whoop, as compared with the more dis- creet plan of lying stili and fearfully permitting the robber to rob? And the cats out in the back entry, battling at the fron garbage cans for what feasting lies in fishheads and day-before-yesterday beef—do they wot a single wot as to the horror that they are generating in the parlor bedroom just forty-five feet away? A cat at a garbage van does not in itself resamble red murder running riot, but it sounds exactly that way. Every noise which one such makes is the precise racket which goes with the com- mission of a fearful and hideous crime.

The dictionary definition of a window shade says nothing of concealed weapons, jimmies, dynamite or gag. And yet the 1 a. m.window blind is a creature which goes about its business armed cap-a-pie for treason, stratagem and spoils, to say nothing of offences more common, and conseyuently more dreaded. Given a window blind which does not just fit the opening, and which in a sobbing way rubs against the vertical sides of the casement; given also the hour of Marco Bozzaris, and, in addition to these gifts, given a plain, common, earnest civilian, embraced in the arms of slumber up to the time when the rubbing begins, and there is a combination which would drive Mme. Tussaud distracted, fill Chiet Badenoch’s reception rx0m with choice and distinguished slaughters, and make hair of the citcassian and tangental sort the proper ard correct thing. A common yellow window blind which sells ordin- arily for forty-three cents, or for twenty cents on ‘‘bargain’’ days, can bully the Spanish inquisition out of its boots when it comes to terrifying mankind¢.

The doorlock, which takes a notion to rattle back into its proper place after having been turned too far earlier in the evening, knows its business also, and its businss is to people the mind of the man who js just roused from a sweei dream of peace with horrible pictures of sudden and extemporaneous death. In the cave of the lock, which, having been turnec too far back, later releases itsel{ with a sharp click, allowing the bolt tc take its natural position, there can be nc manner of doubt. ‘The half-awake flat dweller has good and ample reason to be- lieve that the noise comes from the lock —hbecause, in fact, it does come there- from. Perhaps, after all, the ill-fit- ting window-blind, which sways in the draught, is the greatest criminal of the age. More midnight alarms have been eansed by it than by almost any othes inanimate maletactor, although the pan- try door, which standing ajar, is pushed open or is closed by the pug dog out on & meandering expedition, is a decent second, —Chicago Record.

NEW HAVEN NUTES.

This seems to be a thriving settlement, adorned at all times by the faculties of nature. The shipping has closed for the past few weeks, being carried on to a con- siderable extent. Pressed hay formed a large part of the export. The temperance society of this place receives very careful attention, and the school is progressing rapidly under the guidance of Mr. Lea, our well known principal, and Miss Deveraux the assisiant. An important event has occurred here that has created a sensation at least to some extent. It appears: that one of our enterprising farmers, Mr. Neil A. Lamont is about completing his tall shipments, consisting for the most part of potatoes, oats, turnips and hay. As he was returning from the city one evening being to some extenc exhilarated bv fire-water, he became bewildered and wandered to the north, south, east and west of Charlottetown Royalty. Here he became entangled in « barb wire fence and had to extricate hi« horse leaving the waggon behind. This young mar reminds one of Rip Van Winkle as he wandered astray over the Kaatskill mountains; on awakening he found himself in the middle of a grove of popular trees and after many romantic wanderings hai to return home. SCHOOL EXAMINATLUN-

The semi-annua! exam ination of North Rusiico school took place on the 18th inst. There were a good number of visitors present iocluding some of the fair sex. The classes were examined by Mr. Pa'rick Movaghan. tercher of St. Ann’s, Hope River, and Professor Gal ant,teacher of St. Andrews School, North Rustico. The d ferent classes acquitted them- selves very creditably, reflecting great credit on theirteacher, Mr. Amos Mon- eghaa.

Phe people of North Rustico may ja tly feel proud of having secured such a pains taking and efficient teacher.
