In the autumn of the year 1799.? eight families of French Acadlansi living in the parish of Malpec. on the shore of Richmond Bay, tempt- I ed by the prospect. of more fruit-

ful harvest fields and richer; fishing grounds than was , afforded by the thickly populated

district in which they lived, decld-l ed upon removing to the wild l.ir.d.s of an Indian settlement, called in thc Micmac language Mitagunechk, signifying "a pad- dle" This place was called Tagumiche by the French. and later on the English called it Tig- riisli

It is siluiitcd on the North East- ern shore of Prince Edward 15- land. These families accordingly shipped their few possessions in canoes and started westward. After a tedious and perilous voyage, they Jiindctl at 'f:;iiish. close to what; .:s noiv called Llic "old Burying Ground". One of the first to leap; ashore has a boy of thirteen years, or age named Pierre Chiasson, who died in 1879 at the ripe old age cf iiinciy-tzircc years. Mr. Chiasson is famous in local history as being the first person to lrll a tree in Tignzsi, iust as Joseph Bernard, is noted as the first personi rhriistcncil in the new mission.

The good people of this inissinn put up iheir first. church in the tear 11101. it was a log build-1 thirty feet long by t.vte.nty livei wide. It was furnished with ii gal-I lery, and the roof was shingled.

The second church of. the mission was built in the year 11126 It was sixty feet long byi 'orty-five wide and was framed. by 'a man called Dixon. Willlam' Harper was the carpenter employed in finish the interior. The site of this church was about. half ii mile to the westward of the first one.

Roads from each point of the compass were eventually opened to it. so that. it became, as it were, thc. centre of a sqiiarr.
