Nara. Day.—The Oddfellows of Char- lottttown will celebrate their Natal Day (Monday next) by attending service in St. Paul’s Church wiere a sermon befitting the occasion will be delivered by Rev. J. Brian. In the evening there will be a social in Oddfellows Hall, at which Bro.” D. R. McLennan will be precented with a veteran's jewel.

in St. Paul’s Schoolroom last evening was well attended The prograniine as published was carried out

was badly gutted by fire on Saturday morning. The loss is covered by insur- ance.

Between Saturdsy night and Sunday morning there were some half dozen rob beries committed in St. John. In a few hours after the robberics were reported to the police, four suspected persons were in charge.

There is a very significant article in the last number of the London Tabiet, which declares that although Tarte may tence Mgr. Merry del Val, he can only come to one decision, that the schoo! settlement is very unsatisfactory.

Lieut. Governor MacIntosh states that the farmers of Manitoba and the North- west paid out of last year’s crop no less than $3,500,000 of indebtedness. In fact, his honor declares that most of them are now vlear.

In the New York east conference of Methodist ministers, a resolution § was adopted censuring the growing custom of riding on Sunday cars, carriages and bicycles. Bicycle riding in particular, was strongly condemned.

The proposed diamond jubilee celebra- tion in Moncton has practically received its death blow. The general committee appointed by the citizens to take charge of the proposed celebration, has resigne od in consequence of the cilizeps refusing to vote the $1,000 asked for. The citizens’ meeting only voted the sum of $500, expecting the balance to ve raised by sub- scription.

Buller, at present adjutant general, is mentioned as his successor as commander: in-chief.

Tbe London Standard has a despatch from Madri] which says that. as_parlia- inént cannot vote supplies for the colonial ware until June, even if the Cortes should be convoked before that time, the govern- ment is nsing the authority that was g anted to it at the last session, and wiil obtain advances from the Bank of Spain to meet expenses of the war in Cuba. The bank will furnish $13,600,000 imme- diately, and $12,000,000 later. The loan will draw tive per cent. interest, and will be guaranteed by Cuban bonds of 1890 aud by the Spanish treasury. Ocher banks will advance $20,000,000 now, and

$10,00,000 later for expenses incurred through the rebellion in the Philippine Islands.
