THE WHELAN MONUMENT.
Reverence for the dead, and particular: ly for the dead who have done great things for their country, ie the feeling of gen- erous hearts. It is creditable to the Irish- men of this province that they heve kept alive the idea of erecting a suitable monu- ment to their greatZcompatriot, Edward Whelan. We regret that the came idea with respect to George Coles is not equally inevidence. The names of Coles and Whelan must ever be linked together in the history of this Province as those 0° the men chiefly instrumental in obtaining for the people, en masse, Responsible Gov- eroment and Free Education;aud we should be delighted if the names of these two, foremost among the true Liberals ot Prince Edward Island, were linked together jn a movement for the erection of @ monu- ment to each.
Exce'lent portraits of each, by Harris, adorn the walls of our Legislative Chamber, and loving hands have erected for each a stone to mark the place where the honored dust lies entombed. But the public upon which these two patriots con- ferred their boons has yet to supply the fitting public monument which each de- serves, and which it should be the pleasure of a generous snd thankful people to supply.
Those who have for thirty odd years kept alive the idea of a mo sument to Whelau are now, sga‘n, about to make an effort to obtain sufficient means to effect their purpose; and we hope that men of good will in every part of (he province will unite with them, and that the ‘‘grand demons'iatior, ” on the 27th instant, wiil be a distinct success in every respect.

High Court Now Being Held at Souris
The High Gourt of the Independent Order of Foresters began its seseion at Souris yesterday afternoon. About a hundred officers and delegates are in at« tendance, The High Court Degree was conferred on about fifty persons, aud the High Court was reduced to a Subordinate Court 8o that all members of the Order a take a seat.

Allusion was made to the work of organization, An organ zr 18 wanted, notso much for starting new Courts as looking after the old Courts and getting members totake more inter- est in the Order, and in their own Courts particularly., In that way a large cum. ber of suspended members could be saved.
In regard to bonus to members the rerort siated that at the next meeting of the Su- preme Court the eurplus will have reach- ed twenty-five dollars per capita, aud that it vould be well for the Courts here .o discuss whether section fifty-five of the Constitution be acted upon and a bonus given all members of seveu years’ standing Or nol.
The Foresters’ Ward in the new P.E Island Hospi:al was mentioned. Th committee could not secure a ward on the terms given at last session, and it was thought best to reter the’ whole qaestion to the High Court,
One taragrarh of the report re- ferred to t.e ‘enemics’ if the Order, and stated : “But there are some who, if it were in their power, would stop the progress of our noble Order. Notably among there are a few pas‘ors of churches who would give their blessiag to some sunall sectarian society rather than to a noble iastitution like the Independent Order of Foresters, which admits all worthy men and women regardless of where they worship.
“T am not aware that these efforts have prevented any desirable men from j ining ovr Order, but if such spiritual advisers thigk they are helping the cause of jus« tice by endeavoring to pull down our society to build up another they have much to learn of true fraternity.”
The High Secretsry’s report showed tocal numberef courts to be37 and the pres:nt membership 1614. Tle High Treassurer’s report snowed cash on hand from last year $401.95; receipts during the year $987.34- expenditure $1,018.00: cask on hand aad io bank $371.29.
Rocky Porst.—There was a large and intereeting meeting of Elliott Division, Sons of Temperance, on Wednesday even~ ing. The resident clergyman, Rev G. McIvor, and the Provincial Deputy, Mr. J.J. Chappell, were present and spoke words of encouragement to the members, urging themas good soldiers to move steadily forward until their purposes are accomplished, namely the total and en~ tire prohibition of the iniquitous liquor traffic, that is causiag so much euffering and desolation im our midst. Next Wednesday evening there will be a free mee:ing Open to the public. An excellent programme assisted by city talent is being arranged. The meeting will open at sharp 8 o’clock.
