Tre editorial Recorder, in Haszard’s Gazette of last Satur- day, deigns at last to notice our comments on his conduct, in a manner so ludicrous that a feeling of pity for the state in which he finds himself placed before the public, almost in- duced us to refrain from any reply which might render him dill more uncomfortable. We are gravely informed that as Solicitor of ‘the Gas Company, he is not paid by an annual salary, but merely for work performed. The important fact | was, not the mode in which he was paid, but that he wes paid by the Company as their Solicitor: this he does not attempt to | @ny. Tn connection with this, we are tempted to refer to the letter he addressed ast week to Silas Barnard, Esq., whom he | selected as tite individual to be addressed on the subject of the | diseussion in the Common Council on the Gas Company's Bill | for damages to their pipes by the Corporation.

Of the mackerel catch the report is favourable. On our shores they have done well, and the latest returns from the Bay of St. Lawrence declare them plenty and fat. It is to be hoped that the mackerel men may have a good season ; generally it is a poor business, and of late years has declined in this section, except in Gloucester, that takes the lead, and which is more abundantly supplied with men from the Provinces, The increase of the shoe business-has crowded hard npon all kinds of fisheries, as that is more profitable, and it will in Gloucester, if the attempts to introduce the shoe manufacture should succeed there.—New York Herald.

Tue Boat Race rerween New York anp Sr. Joun.

The preliminaries (says the N. ¥Y. Clipper) were recently ar- ranged in Boston, between Mr. Walter Welsh, on the part of St, John, N. B., and Mr. Stephen Roberts, on behalf of New York. It was agreed that the race should be for $1000 a side, in boats to be rowed by four men each, the men to be respectively of St. John and New York. On making the match $200 a side were deposited in the ands of the skarcholders—a second deposit of $200 a side was

to be made good on the day previous to the race. The day selected for the race is the 20th of next month, when the vexed question as to the superiority will be be decided on the waters of Charles River, Boston.

It is needless to say that this match is attracting attention in the States as well as in the British Provinces. Both crews are now engaged in training, and will continue with their exercises until the eventful day arrives. Boston must pre- pare for a large increase to her population in September, for thousands will visit the modern Athens to witness the great race,

Sasa upon te Cenrrat Rarnoap — One Honore AnD Sixty Swine Sravonrenen—Srx Freranr Cars Demo- LisHeD.—An accident, the result of miscalculation, and want of perception, occurred at West Albany last evening, which, while it resulted in no personal injury to any one, caused great damage and loss. A freight train of eighteen cars, coming east, was run into by another train, also coming this way, and with such headway that five or six cars were entirely demolished. One car contained swine, nearly all of which were terribly mangled. Some three or four, it is said, eseaped injury, but they were so much frightened that they scampered off into the woods.

Five or six cars, containing butter and produce of a

i e nature, were dovetailed in such a manner that it _ impossible to tell butter from cheese, and cheese from

utter.

The hind cars of the foremost train, when the two trains came in collision, were piled one upon the other, in great confusion. The debris presents a sorry sight, as the produce is nearly all rendered unfit for consumption. The swine were consigned to Mr. Potter of Troy.

The accident, it is said, was caused by the miscalculation of the flag man, who, not thinking that the rear train was so near, did not get far enough around the curve to prevent a collision. The damage resulting cannot be less than $5000 or $6000.—AlLany Express, August 23.

[ assure you I am perfectly sensible of the great advantage that this community would derive from the restoration of a Detaehment of Her Majesty's Troops to this Island, and [ have not failed to bring the subject under the notice of Her Majes- ty’s Government. I shall take the earliest opportunity of informing the Secretary of State of the extent to which you concur with me in tle representations I have already felt it my duty to make to Her Majesty’s Government, in reference to this subject.

A Dartya Excounrer wirn A Bear.—On the morning of Friday last, the loud bellowing of a cow under torture was heard in the Big Marsh Settlement, Lot 42. Three men, Donald and Mathias MacCormack, with a neighbour by the name of MacInnis, armed only with axes, immediately started for the place from which the now pitiful groans proceeded, with the intention of rescuing the suffering animal. When they reached near the scene of distress, they could see through the thicket a huge bear preparing for himself a sumptuous repast. So intent was he upon his prey, that he was not even disturbed by their near approach, until a dog, a few paces in advance of the men, ran up to him; bat the experienced buteher, far from retreating, attacked the dog most furiously, following him as he retreated, until a few paces brought him in contact with the men, who, seeing evidently from the un- pleasant grin of their aggressor, that he was bent on their destruction, and secing no hopes of safety by flight through thickets and windfalls, put themselyes in a state of defence from an instinct of self-preservation. MacInnis, in per- forming some hurried manceuvre, was tripped by a small twig and thrown off his feet, and while the bear was attempting to take adyantage of him as he lay prostrate, by springing upon him, the two MaeCormacks, with their faithful battle-axes, dealt each a well-aimed blow upon their formidable antagonist, laying him prostrate at their feet, while a few more blows, given with right good will, left him as lifeless as the carcass of beef within a few paces of him.

Would the man who has sufficient nerve and courage to wield an axe over a real, living, infuriated and aggressive hear—and in the bear’s own territory—be likely to gain laurels in taming a Russian Bear? We think he would if he had a chance of being drawn out.

The Niagara Mail says the Wheat erep in Canada is generally harvested, and, on the whole, the result is most satisfactory. The Mail is of opinion that “a competent scientific commission should be appointed by Government to investigate into the origin of the weevil.”

Deatu rrom Drowntna.—On Saturday last four boys were playing im a canoe at the shore of Mr. Patterson’s Cove, when the wind being off the land, their frail bark drifted some distance from the shore. Being without paddles or any means of guiding the canoe, and fearful of drifting out into rough water, they all leapt overboard and attempted to swim ashore, but they became exhausted and sunk before reaching a place where they could get bottom. Aid was near at hand and they were soon rescued, but not until in one of them life had become extinct. The other three, although far gone, eventually recovered. The deceased was a son of Mr. Head, a fine boy of about eleven years old.—Eastern Chronicle.

May Krttep.—A fatal accident occurred at River John on Monday last. A number of men were engaged in raising the stern post of a new vessel which is being laid on in Mr. Charles McLellan’s shipyard, when by some accident the sheers which they had erected for the purpose, tripped and fell, the stern post in its descent falling upon Mr. James Lawder, ship-carpenter, fracturing his skull and causing instant death. Several other persons narrowly escaped serious injury. The deceased was a worthy man and much respected. He leaves a family to mourn their sudden bereavment.— Jd.

Tue Frisnenirs anv tHe Crors.—It is gratifying to hear that our fisheries have been very successful the present season. First, the catch of Spring herring, with the exception of a partial failure in one or two localities, was very abundant. So was also Gasperaux. The accounts res- pecting the Salmon fishery are equally satisfactory, and an unusually large number of persons are employed putting them up incases. This has caused much competition among purchasers, and enhanced considerably the price of the article, —Miramichi Gleaner.
